    Hi All,
First post here. Anyway, I bought the Inspiron E1705 and followed the great directions here for a clean install. I then contacted Dell CSR by chat and asked for the support CDs which included Dell Media Experience and PowerDVD. No problem. CSR said that he could send out all the CDs. But once I received the invoice, I saw that I was charged $80. Is this right?? During the chat, he didn't mention anything about being charged for these CDs. Did I assume wrong in thinking I would get these CDs for free?

Do you think I can return the CDs for my money back?

I gotta ask, isn't possible to copy the programs you requested using the software that was installed rather than getting them from Dell?

    That is messed up.
Did you request the four CD's?
    Dell Applications Backup CD/Tools CD
    Dell Media Experience
Inspiron Drivers and Utilities Resource CD
WXP Media Center Edition 2005B, DVD

I got mine by emailing Dell but your situation does not seem correct. Unless you ordered a backback and some notebook accessory you should not have to pay them anything.. NOTHING.

    Edit:
Are you still under warranty with Dell?

I ordered the XP MCE back-up with my laptop for $10 and got that plus the Dell drivers CD. Why should Dell send him anything for free that he chose to delete?

Did Dell actually charge you or is it only on your account?
When I requested my disks my account showed $60 but I was never charged by dell.

Yeah my dell rep told me that my emails might appear to look like I was charged, but she assured me that I would not have to pay for the OS cd. By the way, I'm not the original poster.

Yeah, the charges showed up in "My Account" for me too. Pretty sure my credit card wasn't charged, though. We'll see when the bill gets here, but I never re-gave them my info, so I'd be extremely surprised if they charged for the backpack or cds.

OK, I'm feeling somewhat better after hearing from some of you that the charges really never occured even though it appears on the invoice.

To the poster who said that why should I get anything if I chose to delete my software. Would the situation be different if I or one of my kids accidently formatted my hard drive? How about if you downloaded and paid for some software and in replacing your hardrive the software that you paid for got wiped. Would you feel justified to ask the company to send you a free copy of the software that you already paid for? Or would the poster "do the right thing" and order another copy.

I think that when you buy a computer with the software installed, you should have ownership of all the software. Otherwise, Dell shouldn't pre-load anthing and I can load Ubuntu myself for free. Believe me, if I had the option to take down the price $400 (which I figure Windows XP, PowerDVD, Sonic DVD, etc.... would be worth), for a clean machine, I would of taken it.
