I know this issue upsets some a lot - the fact that the hard drive is so inaccessble that the replace it you need to dismantle the laptop and remove the motherboard.
Memory upgrades and HDD replacement doesn't normally affect a laptop warranty but then that's with laptops where to replace the hard drive you just unscrew a cover on the base of the unit.
So what about Inspiron 15Rs?
Also, with the XPS 15z the battery is not user-replaceable. So what happens if it fails prematurely? What is the criteria for a warranty repair of the battery? I never could understand why manufacturers wanted to lock the battery inside, like with some mobile phones (Apple iPhones and iPods being the prime example).

Hi JFB-online
My name is Arvind s and I work for the Social Media and Community Team at Dell.
My understanding is that you want to know if you replace the if you replace the hard drive by your self ifit will void the warranty .this will not void warranty if there is no damage to other parts since hard drive is a FRU .
In Case of XPS 15z system is a Slim so battery is a FRU so if battery goes bad request you to call tech support will send a tech to have it replaced or as per you warranty .
Please Note :Battery will have one year warranty for any system
Thanks & Regards
