Will changing the lid on my 1520 void my warranty? I had a regular in-home warranty, but just upgraded to CompleteCare today (in case of any other accidents ><). Will my warranties be voided if I install a new lid myself? They'll definitely be able to tell because my old lid is green and the new one is black.

From what I've read, it should be okay, but I wanted some other opinions. Thanks!

Why dont you ask them that way you have it documented in case something arises. Our opinions dont matter.

That's a really good point, nizzy. Dell chat was down at the time I posted this (I think it still is, too) and I wanted to get some opinions/personal experiences in the meantime.

Yup, contact Dell. I am very sure that any user changes will void the warranty though. They would rather charge you to replace it themselves. :p

When I had my Dell 1721 fixed by an engineer at my house, i said to him just to make conversation "Don't worry about putting it all back together as I will be fitting this Red lid when you go" and he said back "do you want me to fit that for you, as I dont mind!" and I was like omg, so he fitted it for free. One bit of advice though, you will need to buy a new screen bezel matching the colour of green if you are changing the lid, as the side bits on the screen are part of the bezel.

Swapping the lid does require a bit of dismantling. From what I can remember off of the top of my head, you have to unscrew the hinges, disconnect the video cable (and unscrew the ground screw) and disconnect WLAN, WPAN and WWAN card antennas.

Once you do that the display will come out. If you want to change the lid completely (including LCD) it would be fairly straight forward, just put the new unit in. If you are changing the color insert that is a bit more. You'll have to remove the LCD panel I'm pretty sure.

I think dell is reasonable enough to realize that swapping the lid isn't going to cause any problems that might come up - blown memory or whatever.

    Hope this helps...
