I just called Dell to add a fingerprint scanner to my XPS1330. I was told that once the unit is in production, you can't change anything. The only option is to cancel the order and order it again, which will send me to the back of the line.

Can anybody confirm this? I was under the impression that you can make changes till the order ships.

Sounds like they already made your M1330, which in that case if it were true, would make any kind of upgrade (like a fingerprint scanner) hard to implement.

i can confirm... I tried once to ask for a change on a server we ordered the day before, and it was almost shipped, so they just proposed to cancel. Don't see Dell as the next door computer shop. They don't just build each computer one by one, put them in a cardboard, reopen it to change something, then ship them. See them as a car builder. The scale is just totally different. When a computer goes into production, it has all its options set, just like options for a car. To change something means to send back the computer in the production line, and that's just impossible. The workers will just not have the right tools to do it for instance.

To me, it just makes sense. Industrially speaking I mean.

That sucks! I guess I will have to do without the fingerprint reader. I just thought it would be kinda neat to have.

The fingerprint reader isn't something that you'd need definitely. Even as a big corporate worker, the fingerprint reader can be beaten much easier than the traditional passwords.

It's just something more of an accessory. It's neat to have, but not really a necessity. So don't feel so bad about not getting it. You're still getting an awesome system.

I changed my Drake order today. They also said the old order have to be cancel and a new one be placed. Push my delivery date back from 8/22 to 8/27. They promised to keep all your promotion pricing with the new order and they did. They limited you to only three changes though. I don't know this was because of the bundling with the drake deal or what.

They also will give you a new order number and have to transfer your previous credit card authorization to the new order and thus won't show up on the order status for one business day.

My new order is now in production

I tried calling someone, and they said they couldn't honor the previous price...and I'd be subject to all the current promotions, and I couldn't use the previous ones. I need to be recommended to a good rep!

Dell was terribly annoying to me today.

I didn't even actually want to change anything at all as far as the configuration itself. I wanted to upgrade from my 3-year inhome warranty by adding CompleteCare with Lojack (available online for $69), and wanted to add an additional 6-cell battery since mine already came with a 9-cell.

Dell told me the second thing was impossible and told me that the first could only be done by cancelling my order and re-placing it, meaning I would lose the previous price. Obviously, I declined.

There is still an easy enough way around it. Use the service tag once you get the machine to upgrade the warranty. And once XPS starts shipping, the accessories section of dell's battery page will be updated and I can get a 6-cell from there!

    Nonetheless, terrible overall experience.

huyqp, do you have the ID Number/name of the rep you talked to? I am not canceling for the fingerprint reader, but if I can get it added and get the old price then why not
