I have a brand new Inspiron 6000 from dell that I got a week ago.

If I put the computer into standby and wake it up about 5 minutes later by pressing the power button, it wakes up fine.

However, if I put the computer into standby for longer periods like 30 minutes or more, the computer does not resume from standby. The monitor stops working, the keyboard stops responding (I press the caps lock and num lock keys but the status lights do not change.), and the mouse does nothing.

I first thought it was a video driver problem causing the monitor to not turn back on but when i checked Dell's site, I have their latest drivers.

Now I'm thinking that it has something to do with the power management. Perhaps the hard drive or something else is set to turn off at 30 minutes but is missing a driver to turn back on?

I find this to be weird as this is a brand new laptop which should have very recent drivers...

Most of the time, it has been from my experience that this is a problem related to XP.

Up until, I did this last reformat everything worked on my computer. Now, my laptop has a hard time coming back from standby or anytime the LCD turns off.

I still haven't found an answer, but you might change your power settings around. Unless you absolutely need to go into standby, you could just use your power button to put your laptop in hibernation mode.

Put me down as another i6000 P-M1.86(1 week old as well) user having the same issue. When machine is left on for a while and goes on standby(LCD off),pressing power button used to bring it back to life but no more. Have to resort to powering down/up the unit to get it backup and running again.

I have a year old i6000 C-M 1.3 that does not have the problem. Only difference in OS is that the newer one is XP MCE.

There have been some suggestions to flash the bios to the latest release. I would also make sure that your windows are completely updated.

As a last resort before calling dell, try reformatting your HDD if you haven't already.

Seems that allowing the automatic window updates thus getting the latest XP patch(s) fixed my issue. The auto update feature was the first thing that I disabled right out of the box.

Same here... Inspiron 6000D - Standy doesn't work.

I had a Inspiron 8600 prior to this laptop and it worked great... :(

My brand new e1505 dose this as well. If I close it and it sits for a while it will not come back on when I open it. Then only way I can seem to get it back is to hold down the power button.

Called Dell... and I think this might of fixed it.

Goto your Device Manager (Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager).

Find your Network Adapter and select properties

Goto the Power Management Tab and uncheck all checkmarks

Now my computer seems to come in and out of stand by more reliably.

    Give that a try.

Just and update. I went to an Easter party and just closed the computer. When I cam back opened it up and it came rite out of standby. So while I would kind of like to have what I disabled it is more important to come out of stand by. Thanks for the help coolspot

I prefer hibernation over standby to save battery life, turning on the lappy from off is also much faster.

i have an inspiron 6000 laptop as well running windows xp sp2..

and am suffering the same not resume from standby issues..

i upgraded the bios and graphics drivers...will a little improvement but
    still not reliable...

dell support said it was a "software" problem.

but i am a bit skeptical since i have downloaded all the microsoft updates

is there special patch not covered in the microsoft updates?

Last week my motherboard gave out and Dell replaced it with a new one.

Guess what - suspend works flawlessly.

    Perhaps it's a hardware issue...

The Inspiron E1505 also has this problem and I have not been able to resume my computer at all and so have not been able to install the new BIOS.../ avoid using standby in the future...

    Suggestions?

holding down the power button has no effect...
