AKA the Insperion 1420 and the Boot Errors from Hell

My HD may well be toast. I'm trying to restore since it isn't booting.
I asked it to boot from last good configuration: Black screen of nothingness.
I have tried to boot from the partition using the F8 repair function. It gets to the green loading bar then stops.
I tried booting from the OS disc; it says "loading windows files" and hit any key but then...nada. The next step in each should be the language choice and then instructions to restore

I can still access BIOS and run diagnostics (error at end) but any and all booting fails. I was able to check the partitions and I have the utility, MediaDirect, Vista and Restore (0F) partitions, ostensibly, intact. HELP!!!

    Code 0142
    MSG code 2000-0142
Unit 1: Drive Self Test Failed.
    Status byte = 70

All other diagnostic tests were fine.

    Is it still under warranty?

It's new but when I called Dell they refused to help because I bought it at Best Buy. Best Buy, of course, wants to charge 200 for diagnostics.

    Hi TigerlilyLynn,
I'm sorry for all the inconvenience that your having with your new laptop. It definitely looks like there is a problem with your hard drive, and it needs to be replaced. Unfortunately, I'm unfamiliar with the warranty coverage as far as Dell retail, or Best Buy's current policies. This may not be a full solution, but it may be cheaper to purchase a new hard drive. However, it may be worth pursuing a return with Best Buy.
