So, I put in an order for a Dell XPS 1530 this Thursday morning using a combination of deals from Dell. Because, I guess, these laptops are in high demand, Dell stated that my order would not be shipped until 12/28. Not a problem for me at all.

However, after deciding that 1200x800 resolution is simply unacceptable in a 15.4" notebook, I decided to call up and cancel the order (because this is not possible on the web). After waiting for nearly 20 min on the phone, the polite representative informed me that I could NOT cancel my order because it is in the "final stages." Instead, I would have to accept the laptop, and then return it (thereby wasting my time and causing me significant hassles). Note that on the web, my order status has not changed, and the ESD is still 12/28.

Anyone ever experience this? My theories:

    (1) Dell feels I will more likely be inclined to keep the purchase if I actually receive it (which is probably true) and therefore wants it delivered.
    (2) Dell would like to keep Q4 sales inflated as much as possible and therefore would go through great lengths and expense in order to keep Q4 sales and transfer the write-down to Q1'08.
    (3) This representative has no idea about what he is saying.

EDIT: After talking with this guy for nearly 30min and explaining that he can either cancel the order or I will call my credit card company and stop payment, he spent another 10 minutes tracking down a supervisor and canceled the order. Has anyone else experience anything this absurd with Dell?

So i guess its all good that you cancelled your order. The shipping dates are that far back because the laptop is in high demand...so many people on this forum are getting one...so think of it on the larger scale.

Every company is like that...horrible customer service n blah blah blah...

I was able to cancel my order and it was scheduled to ship out the next day so I would call back and talk to a manager.

Sheesh...if a rep had lied to me like that I'd sure be well...mad. Good to hear it worked out though.
