    All -

I just called Dell Support to cancel my order for a Dell Studio XPS 16 notebook and they said that it could not be canceled because the system is in the final stages of production. Am I not entitled to cancel before they actually ship out the system? The rep said I have to take delivery and then call to request a refund. They have not charged my credit card yet, so could I call my bank and have them deny any forthcoming charges from Dell?

    ?

That is the normal thing they say.. not sure if you can try to stop it via your Credit Card Company.. I suppose if you used a Debit Card / bank account just for this purchase, you could pull the money out after the 5-7 hold expires (which usually happens since Dell has long EDD).

They can charge up to a 15% restocking fee for returns..

Don't worry that's Dell's S.O.P. so do as they say. Take delivery, don't open the box, call them for a call tag and they'll send UPS out to pickup the box.

Shhhh, don't tell anyone but the reason they do that is they hope once you get the box and hold it in your hands you'll think twice, open the box and decide to keep it. It's happened to me several times so their strategy works. :D

Just don't get tempted to open the box or you'll wind up like me with a computer you had no intention of keeping, LOL.

See, I definitely want to avoid the 15% restocking fee. If I cancel my checkcard (I used my checkcard) today then the transaction will be denied on my bank's end, right?

They won't charge you a restocking fee since a) you already called to cancel the order and b) you'll call them once the laptop arrives. So no, you won't get charged a 15% restocking fee. :p

I could also go the brute-force route and just cancel my checkcard, which will completely deny the transaction from even processing, right?

Not advisable as Dell will give you back 100% of your money. Also Dell will put a hold on your money possibly longer if you refuse the package. Don't freak out, Dell is not out to cheat you. Like I said they do this for the reason I stated. You'll get tempted and open the box and keep it.

Their system works and you'll get your money within 3-5 business days they receive your laptop but you need to call them for a pickup. ;)

edit: If you used a checkcard it's treated as a cash transaction so you better do as they say, LOL. You'll get 100% of your money back.

Thanks! I'll take your advice. (Is the laptop worth keeping?)
