Hi, I had ordered my Dell XPS 1530 laptop on Aug. 8 and it supposed to be shipped today (Sept. 4). However, I received email notification saying that it won't be shipped until Sept. 24.
I am wandering if I have the right to cancel my order. It is like a two months wait for my laptop!!! If I can't cancel my order, could I ask sales representative to give me a discount or take the deal of buy one XPS 1530 and get a netbook for $99 which starts tomorrow?
I am seriously considering cancelling my order from Dell and order a HP dv5t.
What are my options?
Thank you guys for your inputs!

You can attempt to cancel your order, though most likely you'll have to return it after it ships.
-
You can always cancel, up to the point just before it is shipped.
I'd at least call and ask them why before making any decisions. -
47 days for a laptop? I'd demand compensation, you're didn't pay for the long wait, you paid for the primary ESD, not a second ESD which you should have to suffer for.
-
8600m GT's are in short supply right now.
-
Will cancelling cause me extra charge? Do they have restocking fee or penalty charge?
I will definitely give them a call tomorrow. It is still in production... -
Whooops...wrong thread.
Anyway, no they do not charge for orders canceled before shipment. -
So tomorrow when I phone in, I can tell the sale representative this. -
Yeah, I would call and give them beef. Ridiculous that you have to wait that long. I would talk to them about your concerns and potential desire to cancel.
They should compensate your for their mistakes.

Yeah... ^^^ What they said

Thanks all for your help.
Almost two months of waiting is really ridiculous. By the time I receive my laptop, the Dell's Centrino 2 version will be out.
I paid by credit card and already paid the bill. Do they write me a check for refund? -
They credit the credit card back.
-
I see.
First thing I wake up tomorrow is to give Dell a call. -
-
-
They don't DEBIT your card until the product ships, but they money is already being HELD by them. This is as good as spent cash to the typical Joe (I have worked in a bank). It is sort of like you taking a wad out and giving it to a cashier, who then waits for Jim to take your box to your car in the parking lot before finalizing the sale. So, yes, every time you pay for something with plastic you need to be aware that, debit immediately or not, you are already in a position where you may need to argue a little to get your cash back! : )

-
I also like how they charged you immediately for the notebook, but if you tried to get a refund it would probably take a month or so to actually get it. -
Yeah, the credit card company already showed the bill online so I paid them before the deadline to avoid late payment with high interest rate.
-
I just finished calling them.
Nope I don't get any compensation from them. The order is now in the boxing stage and the estimate ship date is still 9/23/08.
I was finally transferred to custmor care with a lady with authority to give any compensation, but she said she that the laptop is ready to be shipped and can't give me any discount. I was very nice in asking, but the lady's tone of voice was pretty bad to start with.
sigh... two months of waiting for a laptop.
Do you think that with the sales representative who I purchased from would have the authority to give discount? -
Well, if they think you are fishing for a discount, they aren't going to bite...you need some better bait...like calling to cancel the order in order to "reel them in".
Normally, I wouldn't promote calling just to get something for nothing, but the amount of time you'll have to wait is ridiculous. If it were me, I'd have a long list of reasons I was depending on the laptop showing up on time, and how it severely inconvenienced me, simply b/c they were slow.
In the end, just make sure you don't get a bigger headache than the one you may already have -
lol I guess I am never good at bargaining. I asked about how to cancel my order (implying that canceling is a possibility). The lady simply stated the process. Eventually I was transferred to customer care rep, and she kept telling me that it's ready to be shipped and she cannot guarantee me the on time shipment on 9/23/08. If my laptop is ready then why does it take two weeks for Dell to ship it to me? It probably will take another one to arrive.

Tell them it is unacceptable to wait that long for a laptop to get to you, and that it is unacceptable for a supposedly built-and-ready-to-be-shipped laptop to take that long to be sent to you. Tell them those are the reasons you want to cancel their order, and that they need to do so since it obviously isn't built yet and there is still time to do so.
If they still insist on not cancelling the order, then tell them that you are not satisfied with the service you are being given and do not want to give your money to a company that treats its customers like this. Unless they can find some way of making you a satisfied customer, you are taking your business to HP.
If a discount still isn't offered, you probably aren't getting one. -
I ditto that one.
Don't sound angry or unreasonable, just be stern and decided.

Actually I received email from Dell saying that my laptop is shipped today. It should arrive in 3-5 days. I guess it's a little bit of wait. All the representatives were nice except the last one. I guess she was the one with authority to give compensation for customers and many people called her to ask for compensation. Well at least, next time when I purchase PC online, I will keep these things in mind.

No matter. I see from you next post that the notebook has shipped. The same thing happened to me. On my ESD I got a delay notice, and then it shipped the very next day. Seems sort of a common occurrence that they'll give you a new date 2 or 3 weeks away and then it just suddenly ships.
Hope you like your new M1530. Mine's been great so far. -
complain, complain, complain.
squeaky wheel gets the grease.
i have tried to be a nice guy more than once, and i always start out like that, but i am telling you being an a$$hole gets s!it done. not a complete a$$hole, dont cuss at them, just express your frustration and disappointment. there is always something they can do to make you happy. if they still don't do anything for your long wait, send the laptop back, or at least threaten to do so... they don't want it back at all, because they will have to sell it for less, so it makes nothing but since to give you some loot or something -
The laptop should arrive in a few days. The DHL tracking says it might be here on 9/10, but I am now away in vacation. I was hoping to get it sooner so I could use it when I am bored.
How many days do I have before I can have a full refund of the laptop? Does the clock start ticking when the laptop is shipped or when I receive the laptop? Hopefully I could be back in time from my vacation to make sure the laptop is in good condition. -
I've purchased 3 laptops recently, one from HP, and two from Sony.
I had one person at Sony and one person at HP both tell me that my card would not be charged until the laptop shipped, but in all three cases the charge appeared on my debit card within 24 hours of placing the order (my last one with Sony appeared on my account within an hour).
It would be pretty silly for a company to assemble a laptop to customer specs, pack it with any accessories in a box, then ship it before charging a card that by now may or may not have the funds available on it. However, I have no excuse as to why two different reps working for two different companies would offer up those lies, especially when I didn't even ask.
As the other poster (bank employee) mentioned, the manufacturer may not actually have the money in their accounts yet, they are simply asking the bank to hold it for them until they do actually collect. However, I don't know what the purpose is because the buyer still sees the transaction. -
Perhaps it's different with a Debit card. -
Maybe they don't have the ability to reserve the funds on the card.
You could simply prevent the payment and get a free laptop -
At times the "charge" will show up as a temporary charge to ensure the funds would be able to go through. BUT, it doesn't necessarily post until later...although your funds are as good as spent, they aren't transfered to the Vendor until the transaction actually posts.
-
Well, I wasn't expecting this... I ordered a Sony CTO and is estimated to ship on 9/15. The charge initially hit my debit account within an hour of submitting the order online, and now 3 business days later the transaction has dissappeared from my account.
So I guess the rep wasn't lying to me when she said my account wont be charged until it is shipped, but I was still without that money during the first few days after ordering so her statement is miseleading at best. -
In practice there's no real difference...they "hold" a certain amount in anticipation of the charge. But with the Debit it seems to visibly show up as pending, leading people to believe that their card has actually been charged in advance of shipping.
Cancel my Dell laptop order!?
