OK, my father is buying an XPS (13 inch). He is upgrading from 2 to 3gig of RAM, and dell only charges a little over $100 for this.
But for the Vostro 1700, to go from 2 to 3gig Ram costs over $500!!!!
    What the heck???

Please don't purposely bypass the swear filter, it's there for a reason. As for reason for pricing, because they can, and people who aren't as knowledgable with technology or pricing will just do it without much second thought.

There isn't much of a benefit to go to 3gb of RAM anyway. 2 is more than enough for XP, and adequate for the 32bit version of Vista.

There was a thread here a while back that demonstrated that 2 was more effective than 3 somehow.
