after cleaning a malware trojan horse from my system, I need to reinstall my OS (Win. Xp). After repartitioning and reformating will I have to install all the way back to dos and an earlier version of windows and then upgrade to xp? I have dos disks and win3.1, and upgrades disks for 95, 98 and xp? I have a dell inspiron 1545. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

You don't need to upgrade from 3.1. Just use your XP installation media.

No, I'm saying you DON'T need to do those upgrades. Just install XP straight up.

Boot your laptop with the Winodws XP Disk in the CD\DVD drive. When the option comes up to boot from CD\DVD hit any key\Enter. This will enter the installation\set up for Windows XP.

If you are getting errors when installing Windows XP then please detail those problems and we can try to help you.

The upgrade disk doesn't need to be installed over a previous version of windows. You can do a clean install. It simply asks you to put in a disk of an OS it can upgrade from to "make sure" that you are upgrading, but does not actually do anything with that disk other than to check it.
