I finally decided to give Dell a try, and now I remember why I never have tried before. I wiped the hard drive to get rid of all the stupid crap they preload these with, reinstalled a fresh copy of Vista, and I get the BSOD on every boot after the animated loading bar for Vista.

I tried wiping and reinstalling again to the same effect.

    Used another disc, same thing.

    Guess I'm getting a refund.

After you install the "Intel Matrix Storage Manager" it should be good to go.

Issue with the SATA driver I think. Look up Les / Flamenko's guides on doing a clean install.

I got it to work by using Dell's OS CD, then downloaded the drivers from the website.

However, I have discovered that my "quality" XPS has both the dreaded CPU whine (the worst one I have experienced so far) and the screen literally buzzes really loud on any brightness settings below maximum.

Do they even test these things before shipping them?

I guess they don't since a bunch of people experience that buzz from the screen. I hope you are still under your 21 days. Just call in and get a new screen.

I must be deaf, as I don't hear a cpu whine at all. And I can't have had
4 1330's in my hand and not hear it.. lol.

NotebookYoozer, you whine about the abundance of redundant threads in our forums and yet you then decide to clutter this one with content of little actual merit yourself.

If you haven't anything constructive to say, don't.
