    Hey, Guys.

I decided to reformat my new 6400 today. All it well and all drivers etc etc are installed. however, I have some yellow question marks in the device manager and I can't identify them. Seems to be related to pci??

It's filed under other devices-Base System Device. (there are 3 of them)

Anyone able to point me in the right direction?

Also, anyreason why the laptop would be running warmer after a format and reinstall? Just working hard perhaps? Could me my imagination, but it sure seemed warmer on my lap.

    Thanks :)

Try deleting the yellow un-id'd device and reboot. If you can not find the driver on boot make a record of what it calls the device.

Did you run the install for the memory card reader drivers? Usually thats the thing that Windows list as "other device". I assume you got the modem / wireless / LAN drivers done already.

As for the running warmer: check your Windows power profile under Control Panel -> Power Options. Make sure Power Schemes is set to Portable/Laptop. Maybe that will help.

Yeah, probably the Ricoh SD reader.

    Thanks guys :)

It was the Ricoh drivers. Forgot I had those on this system..lol.

One last thing...the dvd drive came up as a sony (MS drivers 2001). However, I'm guessing it is something else based on the drivers available at Dell. Thoughts?

Only some of the dvd drives have drivers from Dell. If your drive isn't listed, then it uses the XP drivers.

As for the heat problem, did you update your BIOS? I don't know if this is the case with the 6400, but on the 6000/9300, if you updated the BIOS, the laptop has to get hotter before the fans turn on. You can download i8kfangui to help control the fans.

Thanks, Southern Girl. So, in other words, the driver for the DVD should be fine? I didn't notice what was running when I received the 6400...and I don't know how to confirm the type of drive.

The temp seems normal now. i'm guessing I was just working it hard formatting, installing, etc etc. Not that it was hot, just warmer.

Probably just the hard drive heating up & working as you installed various things and reformatted. I remember the right side of my keyboard getting quite warm sometimes.

Yes & No, the drive will be okay if you don't have a driver from dell. As long as there all of the hardware have drivers in the device manager, you should be good to go as far as hardware. As for the DVD part, you have to have special software (aka dvd decoder) that reads the DVDs. If you haven't already, contact Dell and request the Cyberlink PowerDVD disc. This is the most compatible with your system because of Media Direct
