Really, anything that you don't use is useless and can be removed. All you do is just look at the installed programs and one by one ask yourself if you use it.

Obviously this pertains to actual software. Don't mess with any windows stuff or drivers.

I don't think Dells these days come with a lot of unnecessary software. For starters, delete the Norton Internet Security Suite or the McAfee Security Suite and replace it with Avast. Also, you may want to delete any Google software that comes with it. They're sometimes useful but that depends.

I would suggest AVG over Avast. I tried Avast 4 before and it was total bs. AVG is much simpler and easier to use and does a better job with detections.

I don't agree with you on that. I don't have specific sources to confirm this, but if you look on the net at some of the virus detection tests it goes Avast>Antivir>AVG. Also, I think the AVG interface is ugly. :(

If it's like the vostro, I'd say:
    Microsoft Works
    McAffee
    Roxio and Sonic crap
    Googlebar

I'd really love to be able to remove Windows Media Player, Windows Mail, MS Internet Exploder, but I should keep their corpses on my system and losing time to keep that darn WMP from stealing file associations again and again.

Mmmm, maybe there is some sort of Vista Lite pack, to decrapify Vista and still have it working.
    Hints, anybody?
