The XPS system i bought comes with a Vista Reinstallation DVD. It says 'only use this DVD to reinstall the OS on a Dell PC'.
If I do not reinstall the OS on another PC, but only use it to boot up the non-Dell PC, repair the PC and restore the system restore points.
Will any error occur due to the different hardware system?
-
Well, the person who I bought my laptop from gave me a copy of his Dell Vista Home Premium DVD since he didn't have the restore discs for the computer. It works just fine for me and all I have to do is put in my product key from under my laptop after I install it.
-
Yeh it should work fine. I use mine to do any error fixing all the times. All Vista dvd disk essentially are the same. Only differs on 32bit and 64bit versions.
If you try installing using the dell vista dvd the only thing that will happen is that you will need to change your product key to activate and the dell logo will appear in the brand area of computer properties.
But yeh you can use it fine. -

the dell vista disc does check whether ur computer is a Dell..otherwise it wont install
might be different in some cases, but generally is that -
How can it check if the computer is a dell?
-
Usually checks for a Dell branded BIOS.
-
The answer is NO. It is against the EULA.
-
You can but the OS will be Dell branded.
-
Yup you can. Like others have said, the Dell Vista DVD does check your computer's BIOS to make sure its a Dell. If you are installing on a computer that is NOT a Dell, then you will have to provide your own product key and activation code when you install.

It should... -
If you think spending $100-300 per copy of an OS is stupid, then linux is perfect for you.
And please, consult the forum rules next time before posting an inflammatory comment. -

Cool. I'll make sure I keep my Dell OEM discs - Dell at least doesn't put bloatware on their recovery discs. No more reinstalling from HP recovery discs that have bloatware for me - just using the Dell disc and HP product key. Not that I'd toss them anyways - I <3 Dell OEM discs. Others OEM discs just don't compare.

sweet !!!!!
-
Ok I have done it as I lost my old disk for my other computer and tried using.
I loaded up and everything was fine, which I though sweet.
But it did say on left click computer, that I only had 14 days left to register a proper M/S code.
I did not have this, I heard there are ways of faking this, but I dont trust them.
But I finally managed to find my proper PC disk and thank god as I was on my last couple days before M/S vista would stop running. I assume thats what would have happened or it just would not update.
So thats my experiance of using my dell disc on another computer. -
Bottom line guys: you need another key to legally install the OS on another computer.
Can use Dell's Vista DVD on other PCs?
