ok I am in contact with a certified ebay reseller who would sell an
    Dell XPS M1710
with 2.16Ghz (Yonah = Dual Core)
    geforce 7900gs
    7200rpm 100gig hitachi
    2 gig ram (667mhz)
to me for $1600... warranty would only be for another 2 months so I was wondering

    a) would you buy it? (it's used but in excellent condition)
    b) is the warranty extendable and
    c) how much would it cost me to buy 1year of warranty through dell for this system?
    thanks

Give Dell a call, and just ask if you can buy an extended warranty for a Dell computer that you are purchasing from a private party. I was told no, but I don't think the guy I spoke with knew what he was talking about anyway. If you get a yes, buy right then, or get his name & info. You can check the Dell site for cost, or ask the rep.

    How old is it?
