that is, using a card like the "Lexar 8GB ExpressCard SSD Flash Disk Model EX8GB-431", can the d830 boot from the card? Dell advertises that using flash will speed up vista booting. Is this what they mean?

If someone has a d830, could you please check the bios and see if you can set the express card ssd as a boot option?

    thanks

I don't think that's what Dell meant. Vista uses it as a cache. So you'd boot from the hd normally, and Vista would check to see if the card is plugged in so it can load stuff faster from it. Booting from it doesn't really make sense, can Vista even fit on there?

they come up to 32 gig. I'm sure vista takes less than that. Dell just told me that you can't boot off it. would it make sense to tell the OS to put it's files on it?

You cannot boot from an external drive, what they are talking about is ReadyBoost ;)

You should be able to boot off of USB. Start up your computer, and press whatever key it says to press to get the boot menu. Isn't USB one of the choices? I don't know for sure that this card would be bootable the way a drive connected to a normal USB port is, but I don't see why not.

Whether you can fit Vista on it or not is another matter.
