Hi, I was think of getting a dell laptop with these specs.
128MB NVIDIA® GeForce 8400M GS
T5470 (1.6GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
SXGA+LCD display
Having a nice quality screen is really important to me. If I get the sxga on the dell vostro with 8400m graphics memory card, can that graphics card handle it without losing performance, or visual quality? If I got the 8600 gt, would it be a big difference in visual quality on the wsxga display???? Thanks,
God bless
Jesus died for me and you.

Any video card can handle WSXGA+. Just not while gaming.
-
Displaying a 2D high res desktop is no problem at all for any gpu out there. It doesn't matter if you have the lowest IGP or SLi 8800GTXs, the performance of the desktop will be the same.
Gaming and 3D related stuff then depends, but on a 2D desktop it doesn't matter. You can even get the lowly x3100 and it will be fine for you. -
Just don't game and you should be fine.
-
I dont want really have to spend extra money if I dont have to. I will mostly use this to watch dvds, and stuff.
-
If you're not playing games get the Intel x3100 gpu, not the nvidia. It'll be cheaper, increase battery life and still do what you want with no difference whatsoever.
If you're playing games of any kind get an nvidia dedicated card. I believe you can get HDMI or DVI output with the nvidia card too, if you're using an external monitor. Not sure if you can do that with the Intel.
Pretty simple. -
The 8400m GS will handle the xsga+ just fine in 2d, when gaming just use decreased resolutions such as 1280x800 max.

Thanks for the reply everyone! So... If I get the 8400m with sxga, I have to lower the screen resolution when play games? What would if I dont, lower it when playing games? Would it hurt the computer, or make it run hot or something?
-
No damage to the computer. Just the framerate drops in the game. It is not fun to play games below framerates 25-30.
-
Framerate? What is that?
-
Well...I do like to play games. OM Man!!! I guess I have to really buck another hundred. ? If I wont be able to play games on 8400m , I am going to go to a china buffet to eat all I can eat to satisfied my hunger.

Yes, if you're planning on playing games released in the past year or so at high quality defnitely consider the 8600M GT.
