I have a D400, that I bought through eBay. I can't figure out the configuration in the RAM bay, or whatever you'd call that. (see attached picture)
I recently went to replace RAM, and stupidly, without even opening it up, simply went to the Dell Service Tag, and found that it supposedly contained two 256MB chips, as follows:
Memory
Total 512 Mb
Available 19 %
Slot Size Speed Type
Slot 1 256 Mb 266 Mhz Unknown
Slot 2 256 Mb 266 Mhz Unknown
Available Slots 0
I had also read that it was capable of 333, Mhz, so I bought two 1 GB 333's.
Then I opened it up, and found one ordinary chip slot and one small thing, that SAYS "Modem" on it. (see white attached picture.)
Can it be? I thought I'd been operating on 512MB RAM. With the new chip installed, the system says I have 1 1/4 GB... Is that little thing a different kind of 256 MB chip? Is there a way for me to install the 1 GB chip I bought (that is, to put in the settings that would receive an ordinary chip? Or is this more costly than leaving it be?)
Thanks
Tom

That second chip is something else, most likely your modem. You're confusing it for a regular ram stick. The other 256 of ram is most likely under your keyboard.
That's why when you put in the 1gb stick you now have 1.25gb. Search for a manual or how to take out your keyboard. -
There are two RAM slots (the other one is under the keyboard), so right now you have one 1gb stick on the bottom and the 256mb stick under the keyboard.
Edit: That's what I get for opening multiple threads in tabs and going through without refreshing. x( -
Thanks adinu and Tex1ntux,
I am so relieved.
I just put in the second chip, under the keyboard, and it is up and running, now with 2gb RAM. What a difference!

Modem and RAM
EDIT: Nevermind
Can someone tell me what this small RAM chip is?
