You may see an improvement if you are using memory-intensive applications in Vista. Your startup times should also improve. You should realize that if you are running a 32-bit OS, you are not going to be able to address the entire 4gb of RAM. Moreover, I realize that you are in the UK, but 80 USD for a stick of 2gb RAM is too expensive. Perhaps you should shop around. To give you an idea, median prices in the US have been around 30-40 dollars for a 2gb stick and between 50-60 bucks for a 4gb kit over the past few months. The lowest price I have seen was 18 for a Crucial PC5300 RAM stick. I realize that prices in the UK are going to be more expensive, but I wouldn't think it would be double....

EDIT: Just noticed that the link you provided was for 2 X 2gb dimms, in which case 80 bucks is okay. Sorry for the confusion....

You might play around with readyboost and flash memory if you want to see what its like(to some extent).

Like booji says 32 bit vista wont realize the full 4gb.

To answer your question about selling your 2gb you might get between 30-45 on ebay selling it. Best way to see what something is selling for is to use the advanced search feature on ebay and under your criteria there is a checkbox that tells the search tool to only show you "completed auction" results. Green prices on the results means it sold, red didnt etc...

As far as memory goes... let me just put it this way. Why do you think you need 4gb? I work for a dept. that puts together systems for users and we had a group informing us that they HAD to have 4gb to run Visual Studio. We gave them a 2gb system with the intent of ordering more memory (but we forgot) and they assumed we gave them what they asked for. They used it for an entire year before finding out it was only 2gb and never complained once.

Don't fall in to the accessory/upgrade trap. Do you really need 4gb? Probably not. Will you see some slight performance increase in day to day use. Some. Is it worth it? I don't know only you can answer that. Do you have the disposable cash to spend?

I used to be Mr. Bleeding edge and spend spend spend for the latest tech. Only to realize that no matter what I bought, in a few weeks it was outclassed anyway. It's all a head game/trap.

    True on both points.

I just wanted it to play games better and load vista a lot faster.

Is it expensive to go from a 32 bit premium to a 64 bit?

    Is that worth it?

Just want a better running system

Having installed both 32 bit and 64 bit vista I can tell you that benchmark software says 32bit vista performs slightly better than 64 bit.

I assume its because it has to address larger memory chunks but never really bothered to find out why.

Hi, canada. I've got a similar issue, but I considered this: a new hdd 7200rpm, SATA 3 gbps ! And believe me, it has improved my machine's performance ! You might want to try the same before upgrading the ram. As written by others, a 32 bit system would not recognize 4 gb ram; I asked ocz and they say about 2.7-3.25 gb ram. It might be cheaper to change only 1 stick of 1 gb for a 2 gb stick. See what happens next, how benchmarking looks like.
Next step: 64 bit system, which would accept 4 gb runing @ 800 mhz ! Which means you might have to re-sell your current 667 mhz sticks ! Check your temps, use a cooler... many things cam impair performance.
That's the advice I got on another thread.
    Good luck !
