Wow, that is a hard question. You have to give more information, like what kind of laptop, how old is it, what kind of operating system, what did you do before you switch it off, what did you do when you turn it on, the sound it made, etc etc before anybody here can help you. Almost everybody here, as far as I know, can't read other people's mind.

The model is Insipiron 5100. it is 3 years old. OS is XP. Start and shut off. to turn it ON, I just pressed the ON button as normal. This just happened to me couple weeks. Do you think this is hardware or softare problem? Is it because the software can not read the power on signal from the register? Do you know if there could be any other possibilities? thanks

    Maybe it‘s problems on drivers.

Most likely hardware problem. My first thought is the CPU fan is short circuit or not functioning somehow, causing automatic system shutdown. I really cannot say much unless I'm infront of the machine.

It may also be some power problem, although it is more likely something related to CPU and its fan. I don't think it is something that you can fix yourself, but a local PC repair shop might be able to fix it cheaper than Dell would. Of course, I am assuming that it is out of warranty. Otherwise, Dell will fix it for free which is much cheaper.
