    Hello,

I am interested in possibly buying a Latitude 830, but hardly find any reviews or user stories about it. Can anybody who owns it share his/her experences (performance, heat/noise, etc)?

Can anybody shed light on why Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7600 (2.33GHz) is not available on Latitude 830? Lack of this on 830 kind of drives me to Lenovo T60. I am a long time Dell user.

    Cheers,
    David

The Dell Latitude D830 is similar the Dell Latitude D630. So far CNET and PC Mag have written reviews for the D630. Reviews for the D630 will come out first because the D630 is the more popular size. Reviews for the D830 are not far behind.

EDIT: I just noticed you are asking about the Intel T7600 processor. The Dell Latitude D830 and D630 use the new Intel Centrino Pro processor. The Lenovo Thinkpad T61 will have a 15.4" version available in about a month. The 15.4" T61 is the Lenovo version of the D830.

For reviews on how well it is built, you're going to have to look at D820 reviews. The 830 just came out, and I think they'll probably ship the first batch of them soon. As far as my girlfriends D820, it runs fairly cool and I never hear it running. Parts are all top performers too.

The D830 is also a Santa Rosa computer, which means it can have the T7100, T7300, T7500, and (when it comes out) the T7700. The new parts are incompatible with the old, which is why you never see the T7600.

    Homer,

Do you know why T7600 CPU is not available on D830?

    Regards,
    David

The Dell Latitude D830 uses the new more powerful Centrino Pro processor that ranges from 1.80 GHz-2.40 GHz.

EDIT: Why does anyone want to buy a new laptop with a dated processor like the T7600?

Just read up on Merom and Santa Rosa...the T7600 is Merom, and Santa Rosa is all new stuff.

    EDIT: I just checked...the D830 is currently offered with the T7700, which is a 2.4GHz 800MHz-FSB processor. The T7600 is a 2.33GHz 667MHz-FSB processor.

So you mean T7500 on D830 is not comparable with T7600 on T60?
    Thanks! -David

This questions is purely out of curiosity. If choosing D830, this is what I will have:

    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7500 (2.20GHz) 4M L2 Cache, 800Mhz Dual Core
SYSTEM Genuine Windows® XP Professional, SP2, with media
15.4 inch Wide Screen WUXGA LCD Panel
    2.0GB, DDR2-667 SDRAM, 2 DIMMS
    HARD DRIVE 120GB Hard Drive, 9.5MM, 7200RPM
VIDEO CARD Intel® Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100

Currently, I have a Dell 9300 which has:

    Pentium M 2.00GHz
    XP Pro
    1G RAM-553
    60G Disk 7200 RPM
    17' WUXGA
    128 Video card.

I am a software programmer. I dont do gaming. I often run many applications at the same time, including SQL server. Sometimes I use photoshop.

How my life will change if I have a D830 with the above specs in comparison with my Inspiron 9300? By comparing them myself, I only see gains in better cpu and more memory. Did I miss something?

    Best,
    David

    Well...

CPU: It is dual core, which means that while your compiling some crazy program, you can do some heavy photoshop work and your system will probably not even break a sweat. Photoshop also will scale well, which means stuff you do will be significantly faster. Bandwidth will be higher too, so things will get faster. You also have more cache, which means program performance will increase more too.

RAM: Everything loves more RAM, it speeds the system up overall.

HDD: Since you double the space...

GPU: You don't do gaming, which means the Intel card will be fine. But complements of that card, you are going to notice a better battery life. That, and the smaller screen, means it will be much easier to carry around.

I just bought 2 d830. Received them both. Screen has terrible light fall of. Both of them. I am on the phone now to return them. First dells I have ever returned. I have bought 6+ in the three years and liked all of them. But a dark band (after you remove the Vista thing). Very noticable and distracting. Sine I got it with both, I will try another manufacturer. Great specs, but bad screen.

Are you talking about the right side of the lcd panel? I purchased a D820 a couple of months back, which had a LG panel, and it had the dark vertical band on the right side of the panel as well. I returned the machine because of that.

I just bought a Inspiron 1520 w/ the anti-glare display. There is light leakage (halo) at the bottom of the screen and pretty significant brightness inconsistency between the top & bottom of display. Dell has offered to replace with a Latitude 830, but it sounds like I may have the same problem. Any ideas? Anyone else experiencing problems w/ 830 display?

I have had the 830 for a couple of days now. Just wondering if anyone has had any problems typing on the Dell keyboard? I was surprised to find that the nipple stick thing is still present. The layout seems unintuitive, it is not something I considered before buying but its the hardest thing to get use to compared with say my prior ASUS and prior LG notebooks. Also, I have found that the display has less contrast than I expected, less as in the black is simply not black enough. The missing card reader is also a bit of surprise also.... I just assumed all notebooks come with a 5-in-1 or something similar. Issues are fairly small so far, but I'll update when I get a chance to use it some more.

I assume he means the sidebar.

Try going to your video card's color settings and fiddling with the brightness and contrast.

Let us know what you get and how it compares!

    Sanity93,

THis thread is rather old. Please create a new thread.

BTW, most "consumer"/entertainment laptop come with features like card readers, s-video, DVI/HDMI, glossy screens but business laptop like the D830 sometimes lack those features(but make it up with others ;) ).

    Thread closed.

    Thx
