    Can a D620/520 take optical drive from another brand laptop?

    I think this is the problem you're going to run into, the bezel on the D620 has a notch for the eject mechanism. It may be possible to swap the bezels depending on your skill level.

    Yes I agree that is the problem, that is why I am trying to ask around, in case someone has actually done it. I've put together mobos and cpus etc for desktop and servers before, so that is not a problem, although I have not much working knowledge for notebooks.

    I suppose my question is also to verify that the D620 would take 12.5mm instead of 9.5mm (for example, Thinkpad T60 ultrabay used to take 12.5mm, but now only takes 9.5mm, according to wikipedia), and that the notch can be taken out.

    Another concern is that the dvd-drive in compal seems to have the connector at right end of the back side of the drive, whereas all dell's ODD has connector in the middle of the back side of the drive. I am not sure whether there is a cable of some sort that I can use.
