The only way that will be possible is if Dell (at some point in the future) offers a newer GPU specifically within the 1500.

Or for the 1520, of course. Dell uses a proprietary upgradeable GPU slot, presumably to make it easier to refresh notebook lines with the same motherboard, so if they ever decided to up the offerings on the 1520/1500, there's a good chance you'd be able to upgrade. However, I don't really see them ever offering a card better than the 8600M-GT, so you're probably out of luck.

theres a fair chance that they will start to offer the DX10.1 cards at a later date. I mean, dell right now scored a gold mine because of those people that want to play some nice games but dont have the $2.5K for a MBP or G2S.

If dell keeps this up then they can easly score the 1*20 with small time gamers. I mean customizable lids are awsome but its the 8600 GT thats driveing the sales. If they dont release some better cards then they will have made a HUGE mistake.

EDIT: i dont know how good of an idea this is on the Vostro as ive heard that they are made more shoddily than the 1520s.

The Vostro's are made exactly the same as the Inspirons.

I wouldn't say that. The Inspiron I returned doesn't feel as sturdy as this Vostro. The interior is much more impressive and it might just be luck but the screen is really sharp while with the Inspiron I had a ton of grains.

I was speaking re: the internal components and the advisability of upgrading a graphics card. The sturdiness of the chassis is not really a factor there.

Wow great answers, do you think we'll ever be able to fit a 8800gt in a 15" lappy?

No. Not with any of the manufacturing processes available now, or on the near horizon. It's possible that a 256-bit card will eventually fit into a 15.4" laptop, but it won't be the 8800, it will be several generations down the line.

I said that a 256-bit card might "eventually fit into a 15.4" laptop, but it won't be the 8800, it will be several generations down the line." I.E. the 1520 won't see an upgrade to a 256-bit card, but in two to three years it's possible you'll see 256-bit cards in 15.4" form factor laptops. I have no idea what they'll be called, as they're not invented yet.

Pretty much right now, if you buy a notebook from any brand, do not expect to upgrade your graphics card unless it is blatantly advertised.

I think that by the Vostro 1500 having a graphics card slot that we are going to have more of a chance than ever to do an upgrade to whatever card is released on the horizon. Check out what was possible the last time Dell manufactured a 15" notebook that had a graphics card slot. I personally did the upgrade with my M70, and it rocked. However, the Vostro with an 8600GT right now is a match for that system and with the possibility of an upgrade on the horizon I think it is probably time to retire the M70.
