    I was wondering if this is possible going through dell or getting an external (if theres such thing)

    Yes you can. Buy a compatible DVD±RW (Sony DW-Q58A, NEC ND6650A or TSSTcorp TS-L632D; there might be other compatible models but these are the most common) either from DELL or from an external seller. Then read the service manual for instructions on how to remove and install the new drive.

    If you want to upgrade your existing internal optical drive then call dell. they can do it for you.

    If you want external drive then buy any internal DVD RW for desktop and buy a USB casing for that. And voila you have an external drive.

    But mind it that a USB drive is always slower than an internal one.
