Can only Dell upgrade my laptop with special RAM? I guess it would cost more and also I have to ship my laptop to them which means I will have no laptop for a period.
So can I just buy my own RAM and install myself?

if your a newbie to all the tecnical stuff i would let dell do it. but if your feeling adventurous search the internet to find out how to do it should be fairly straight forward .

It won't void your warranty to do it yourself, although if you do damage something that won't be covered. But RAM upgrading is usually pretty easy on laptops. I don't know how the 1505 is designed exactly, but underside-of-the-laptop slots really don't carry a risk of damaging other components, and under-the-keyboard ones aren't too bad. The 9400 manual on the Dell Support site will tell you where the RAM slots are and how to upgrade them; if all the RAM slots are on the underside of the laptop I'd definitely recommend doing it yourself.

Can I upgrade my Inspiron 9400 RAM by myself or do I need Dell Technical to do it.
