Been googling around for a solution but can't seem to find any even on here in the forums for hours....

Anyway yeah, for Inspiron 1720, I would like to run 2 HDDs at 7200rpm and 5400rpm. Is that possible? 7200rpm for installing my OS, (Speeds up startup time) 5400 for Documents and everything else...

    I run with a 200GB 7200 as my boot and a 250GB 5400 as storage in my 1720.

    yes it is possible.

you're probably thinking of RAID, which combines 2 HDD as one, to improve speed or reliability. for RAID to work, you need 2 exact same drives for it to work.

Hmm I don't think 1720 has raid though... :) Does it?

@JTOverath How is the battery performance like?

No hardware RAID on the 1720/1700 - Vista can do software RAID though.

So at what RPM will the setup work if I configure my two hard disks (7200 RPM and 5400 RPM) with RAID? Or it won't work at all?

Sorry for the late reply. I never ran with just one drive so I don't know impact, but I still get 4+ hours (depending on wha tI am doing obviously) from the battery. Certainly a lot more then any of the other 17" notebooks I have had.

You need two identical HDDs for raid 0 and raid 1, most people don't need raid unless he does video editing and has one beast of a CPU.

The Inspiron 1720 doesn't allow for RAID.

Now, to the original question, this is what I have... 7200 + 5400 internal drives. So yes, it works.

As for the parts number to obtain : carrier + connector

    HD 2 Carrier : DELL PART # C7586
    Connector : DELL PART # XK231

Cost about 10$ each + delivery.

I don't know why I leave my thread lying around here!

I already have the 200GB 7200 + caddy + screws + original 320GB 5400 for my 1720 machine 2 months already and it is great.
The caddy costs about 15 singapore dollars.

And no, Inspiron 1720 has no raid.
