I have a Dell Inspiron 6400/1505 with XP media center and xp prof. I've been wanting to remove the following programs/I want to know what they do, but I'm not sure if it's safe to remove any of them:

1.) Norton Ghost (can i still recover my laptop in safe mode if i remove it? using the F8 method and can I still do a system restore)?
2.) Learn2 player (what the hell is this anyway?)
3.) Dell Quickset (can I still adjust my battery settings without it?)
4.) Live reg and live update (i think it's for norton ghost.
5.) MSN Explorer (how do I remove it if it doesn't appear on my add/remove thing?
6.) Dell Digital Jukebox driver (what is this for? can i still operate a creative brand mp3 player without it?)
7). Digital content portal and digital line detect (what is this?)
    8). Documentation and suport launcher
9). How can I remove outlook express? it's annoying and useless.
10). Broadcom (what is this anyway?)
    11) . Internet Explorer (I have Mozilla Firefox, can i unistall this without having other programs not work and compatibility issues?)

I'm sure there have been other posts about this. if you know of one, please share it. Any input on these programs would be uber appreciated.

3)Yes you can remove Quickset - power settings can be set in Windows in the Control Panel under Power Options.

5)MSN Explorer is easy to remove, just got to the add/remove programs section of the control panel, then in the left part of that windows click "Add/Remove windows components" (or something of that sort). It should give you a list of programs you can remove from windows itself each with a check box next to them. Uncheck the ones you don't want (MSN Explorer), click OK or apply and you're set.

10)Broadcom is the driver for your LAN connection (wired network).

oooh ok. I had a hunch that was what broadcom was for. Thanks. Is MSN explorer really connected to any other programs besides messenger?

I believe MSN Explorer and Messenger work independently of one another, so I'd say it's safe.

Oh ok. I'll give it a go then. I remember last time I removed msn explorer through a disk cleanup my DVD/CD Rw drive disappeared...but I'll try the control panel method this time...and yes I know it's weird to associate msn with that, but i don't know why else it did that...maybe i just can't do disk cleanups.

I answered the ones that I knew of for sure. The others, I'm not sure of.
1.) Norton Ghost (can i still recover my laptop in safe mode if i remove it? using the F8 method and can I still do a system restore)? Yes you can. You will still have system restore as well as Dell restore utility (restores back to factory condition). If you uninstall this, it will ask you if you want to remove your back partition and merge with your XP partition

2.) Learn2 player (what the hell is this anyway?) Part of AOL/AIM

3.) Dell Quickset (can I still adjust my battery settings without it?) Yes you can remove this but your Media Direct will not function properly

4.) Live reg and live update (i think it's for norton ghost) Yes part of the update feature for Ghost

5.) MSN Explorer (how do I remove it if it doesn't appear on my add/remove thing? Should be under add/remove

6.) Dell Digital Jukebox driver (what is this for? can i still operate a creative brand mp3 player without it?)

7). Digital content portal and digital line detect (what is this?) dial up software that came with your driver

    8). Documentation and suport launcher

9). How can I remove outlook express? it's annoying and useless. add/remove programs-->click on window components-->uncheck OE

10). Broadcom (what is this anyway?) ethernet driver-

    11) . Internet Explorer (I have Mozilla Firefox, can i unistall this without having other programs not work and compatibility issues?) same as #9. Some programs are more compatible with IE than FF, so you might want to leave it installed

ok thank you. I'll leave it be. So uh...I tried to uninstall MSN Explorer and Windows Messenger and guess what? It once again UNISTALLED MY DVD/RW Drive!!! What is UP with that? it's pissing me off. i can't remove anything from Windows components with this stupid laptop because it does this.

I don't understand the back partition and xp partition thing...I read the reformatting post too..

there is a backup partition (aka D: drive) that allows you to store documents on it. If you reformat your laptop, then you could choose to only format the XP partition and your documents would be safe.

If you uninstall Norton, it is going to ask if you on whether you want to keep your backup partition or delete it. If you keep it, Norton will uninstall but your spare partition will be safe. If you decide to delete it, the space will be added into your XP partition.
