Hi, i'm still searching for a laptop and i'm looking at dells 6400 or 1505 ...but i really want xp pro as my os.....1505 does not offer it but 6400 does...i ask if i can install xp onto a 1505 with windows vista because they have a coupon right now for $500 dollars off.... Here is what a chose
    PROCESSOR Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7200 (2.00GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 667MHz FSB) edit
OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Basic edit
LCD PANEL 15.4 inch UltraSharp™ Wide Screen SXGA+ Display with TrueLife™ edit
MEMORY 2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHZ, 2 DIMM edit
HARD DRIVE Speed: 100GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) edit
OPTICAL DRIVE 24X CD Burner/DVD Combo Drive edit
    VIDEO CARD 256MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 HyperMemory™ edit
    SOUND OPTIONS Integrated Audio

With the coupon added it comes at 1,100 which is almost $300 less than to customize these options with a 6400. this coupon works specifically with the 1505 only.. not the 6400 ...i tried it
So now the dilema is can i reformat the 1505 with xp pro?(i already have a copy of this at home).
But i also read in the sticky post "You can use your own XP retail disk as long as you have the key to it. Unfortunately, the key located on the bottom of your laptop will not work with a retail XP disk" xp cd will not format on a dell because a difference with the keys is that incorrect information??
Should i ask for a xp pro cd from dell and format xp pro onto the 1505? is that even possible to do since it comes with windows vista??

if all else fails and i can not format xp onto the 1505...should i just get the 1505 with windows vista....if i do which one should i pick...there are several options for the vista option...i just chose home basic...is there a better choice that isnt' too much cost or unecessary?

Also a question on the wireless cards....should i order the basic one they provide or pay 69 bucks for the intel next-gen wireless n...is there notciable performance difference?....does anyone know?...please respond ...the coupon expires soon...thank you.

hey thanks for that link...i've never seen it thanks...but another question...do i still have to order xp pro from them...it's like $100 bucks more...or can use my burned copy of the xp pro i have at home?...i have the cd key number...or do i have to have an xp pro cd compatable with the specific dell notebook i purchase as quoted in my thread and in the xp reformat quetions and answers page....thanks...

Also do you know how to check how much cache memory a computer has...where do i got about on a computer to get that info?...and do you think 4mb of cache memory is too excessive?...i'll be using the internet alot, with alot of windows open, and downloading music..thanks

If it's a retail version of XP Pro it should work.
If it's an OEM version then it might not.
OEM discs are usually locked to one vendor's machines. Also, the license doesn't allow you to transfer an OEM copy from one computer to another.

Where did you burn it from and where did the key number come from?
And is it an OEM version or a retail version?

As for cache, if you mean the processor cache, I wouldn't really worry about it too much. Adding cache is just another way to speed up the processor in general, like increasing the clock speed. I don't know how to find out your processor's cache, except by typing the processor number into Google and looking for a spec sheet.

thanks for the reply. But i don't know what OEM means...i know it stands for original equipment manufacturer, but what does that mean??...what are the requirements?....but i think the one i had burned is a retail....i used it to install xp on a 2 desktop computers i have at home and they are not name brand computers...just computers that we put together with different parts....so i think it is a retail version...one of my bros friends burned it for us...

hmmm okay......cause installing xp pro onto the 1505 is about $150 more than home edition... i doubt that i can get a xp pro os disk from dell if i order it with home basic edition...besides i have xp pro cd at home...just not sure if it retail..i think it is cause i used it to install xp on different desktops...don't wanna spend 150 bucks for something i already have... thanks
