I have previous generation Pentium M based XPSM140 / Inspiron 630m, which came with MD (ver 1 I think, as it was the first). Can I install MD2 or better if MD3? I am guessing that it is not hardware specific or BIOS specific; unless DELL artificially introduced a restriction based on the model.

Yes, your laptop came with version 1. AFAIK, you should be able to install ver 2 or 3, but I have not tried it yet either. I haven't seen any restrictions on the systems that MD can be installed on. The only problem I can see is that you do not have the MD button, so I do not know if that would play a factor in it. With version 1, we have to use the play button, so MD 2 or 3 might just use that if you upgraded but I'm not 100% sure.

I do have a MD button and all the other media buttons. The casing is identical to the new Inspiron E1405 (AKA 640m,).

Thanks for the reply, I will try and see how it goes.
