there is an option in bios where you can boot from USB, but I can not boot the CD using external DVD writer. And If I have ****SmallLinux in my USB memory stick, can I boot it up?

My build in DVD writer (NEC) fail to read or write DVDs. Reading CD is fine, is it broken?

you can boot through USB sticks. You need to enable USB booting option in the BIOS.Then you can boot your linux.
As far as booting through the external DVD Drive, i think you can boot through a device only if its a master and not a slave.

The DVD and CD uses 2 different lasers to read and write. So if DVDs are not working properly, it means the corresponding laser is not working.Call for service.

search on google,i am not quite sure.
but it should look something like this
mount /'device no'/'partition no' without the quotes and substitute the values for it.
this has to be done when in root(administrator) mode
