Is there someone with a Studio laptop noticing this slight squealing sound too or am I the only one with this "problem"? If you put your ear near your keyboard it sounds like a little morsecode guy is sending a message, even though I'm not interested. I've got the t8300 and I do hear it too during normal usage.
I just would like to know whether this is something that should be considered "normal" (as in they ALL have it) or is this a one case scenario? I saw a lot of posts on the m1330 with this subject but none about the Studio line, hence my interest.
Also, is there anyone with / who knows someone with a montevina based laptop that has the same symptoms?
I do now there's nothing you can do about it apart from the work arounds which I haven't tried yet .

I don't hear it with my S15.

i hear this on my studio 17. i hear this click sound towards the righter side of my keyboard, near the number pads

This is a difficult one to answer, in so much that not everyone can hear it anyway. Some users may tell you that they their machine is fine, when in actual fact, their ear is not able to register the high frequency.
I have a 2.4ghz S15 and there is CPU whine. I had a 2ghz m1330 and it had an audible CPU whine. My GF has a D630 and it has CPU whine, albeit to a lesser degree. My GF was/is not able to hear this whine on any of these 3 laptops and thinks I'm nuts. -

any chance that what you're hearing is actually coming from the speakers picking up some sort interference? I'm in charge of fixing the families computers and I've never heard this "whine" from our ancient inspiron 8100, Latitude D620, D630, or even the quad that's in the desktop I built myself. If the CPU itself was making noise I would think that it would be present in every system that uses the same chip. Make sure that you're not near anything that can cause radio interference (microwaves, Cell phones) and see if you can still hear it. Don't forget that there is a small speaker built into the motherboard, so the the noise does not have to be coming from the main computer speakers.
The other possibility is that it could be caused the laptops cooling system, i've heard some odd noises including repetitive whining that were caused by fans.

Nikon, thanks for your suggestions but it's definitely neither of those. The fan jumps on only occasionally and the speakers aren't causing this either. I guess I'll have to live with it, seems common with these processors. That is if it really is the processors causing this and not some combination of all hardware like some people (more knowledgeable than me) suggest.
