just curious, i have a 1210 with a C2d in it and the CPU whines like a MOtherF'er.

its not that annoying but im still in my return period and am wondering if the v1400 does it.

I've heard that trying rmclock will fix it
Here are some things I copied and pasted

"On the old E1705s I, and many other people used to have that problem. It's often an issue with the core 2 duo processor trying to idle or something like that. If this is the same issue, and after watching that video I'd say it sounds exactly the same as the problem I had, download RMClock and check the box that says "run HLT command when idle.""

"There is another way using RMClock without killing battery life - there is an option "enable popdown mode" is to be checked, and "enable popup mode" is to be unchecked. That keeps the CPU in the more lower power states. It works for me.
    from another thread."

Not sure where I got them, but I copied them to a word file for reference when i got my computer. Hope that helps.

dang...there's so many problems with dell laptops. I just got my Vostro and it's CPU is whining. I was going to read that link about the m1330 CPU whine, but it was really long.

To be fair, the CPU whine isn't Dell's fault.

My 1520 has a tiny bit of whine, but unless it's dead silent I can't hear it at all.

I would suggest anyone with questions search "whine" or "squeal" in this site or that of any manufacturer.

The whine goes all the way back to 1993 and is not restricted to any type of cpu or manufacturer. They all have it.

If you even go to dell or HP, you will also find an info article saying its ok and within standards (lol). What they dont account for is that it gets louder in some systems.

Theres polls on this site that reflect that it may be as prominent as 40-50% of systems being affected.

Personally, i think its an issue the industry has been trying to keep in the closet for years which cant be explained.

Its a draw in the hat as to whether you get it; it cant be avoided.

    How to check for whine?
Is it the fan or is it pretty obvious? present all the time or during heavy loads?
I did not hear it on my V1400 but again I have used it only for 3 hours.

The whine is really noticable in quite enviorments. The whine should come from the bottom center of the laptop.
