    Hey everyone,

Long time lurker, very newbie poster. I've had my Dell E1705 from about August, and recently it's been showing some problems. I ran some normal 3dmark2005 and systemrequirements lab benchmarks for it when I first got it, and I got ~7200 for 3dmark 2005, and a cpu speed of 4.12 ghz.

Just today, I decided to run it again on a whim, and lo and behold, the scores dropped! 3dmark when to 6800, and the cpu speed went to 3.43 ghz. Any idea what's going on? the only thing I have been continuously downloading/installing is windows update, could I have downloaded something useless to clog up my system?

    BTW,

I have tried antivirus scanning with antivir
    spybot/adaware scanning
    and registry cleaner.

    any other ideas?

set your computer's power scheme to Always On. Otherwise Intel's Speedstep technology will not always run your computers processor at full speed regardless if it is plugged in or running off of battery.

Yup, it is just Speedstep. I actually always leave speedstep on unless I am gaming or benchmarking as it will keep temperatures down.

hey guys, thanks for all the prompt replies, but unfortunately that didn't work. I set power to always on and even tried turning speedstep off. No dice Any other ideas?

Alright, do you have Quickset installed on your computer. If so, switch the settings to home/office, this seems to be the only setting that will keep the CPU from throttling. Even the max performance settings allows for throttling it seems. Give that a shot. Also, what CPU do you have?

i dont' think quickset is installed, as I did a clean format as soon as I got it, and did the standard Win XP installation. My CPU is a Core Duo 2400 at 1.83 ghz

no, i formatted as soon as I got the laptop, ran the benchmarks, got those scores(all around August). Recently, I ran them again only to find they've gone down in score.

    Specs(I forgot to mention)
    Dell E1705
    Core Duo 2400 1.83 ghz
    Nvidia Geforce 7900GS 256mb
    2 gigs of 533 RAM
    60 gb 5400 RPM HDD

Well if that is the case i bet you do a fresh format and run the benchmark before you install anything else, you should get your higher 4ghz + scores.

If you are asking for a specific Windows Update that may have got you a worst score, we aren't going to have your answer. Clogging your system? I doubt it. Benchmarks are just that benchmarks. Scores will vary based on software/patches etc that are installed.
