A week ago, I attempted to stop the cpu whine using RMCLOCK 2.30 RC4. My attempt failed, I'm assuming it was a bug in the beta.
Well now the final release works afaik, so do this:
*please note, it is thought to drain batery faster*
-Hook up your AC adapter
- Download RighMark CPU Clock Utility 2.30 final here
http://cpu.rightmark.org/download.shtml
-Look at this screenshot, go to this and enable "Disable C4"
-Now try it out, unplug your ac adapter, put it on power saver mode, and enjoy the peace and serenity
-at times, i can hear a very faint morse code if i put my ear to the intake fan, but other than that i can' thear anything
-
-
This has already been discussed before. The trade off is that you don't get access to the low power state, thus draining battery faster.
-
at 56% i get 1 hour, 10 minutes on a 6 cell, full brightness CCFL with music playing
-
Ah true, the other solutions were messing around with RMClock as well, but not the C4 state specifically. I didn't really pay too much attention to what they were actually doing. The most recent thread I'd read on the matter is here.
http://forum.rightmark.org/topic.cgi?id=6:1257
Seems like they're seeing the same thing as you. -
mine's been going for 5-6 hours on/off ac power, it hasn't frozen/crashed at all
-
Can you do battery tests with it installed though???
-
-
Does this also address the headphone jack noise?
-
At low brightness, CCFL, web browsing,6 cell I get ~2hrs30min compared to ~2hours50min without disabling the C4 state -
well i decided to finally check what this is all about on my new 1520. Given the link earlier about other things to check other than disabling c4 mode, i tried to uncheck the popdown/popup modes. This worked! Although you said you have yet to crash, i have heard of others crashing when disabling c4. I have yet to hear anything negative about the popup/popdown method.
And to the person who asked if it fixed the headphone noise...it sorta fixed it on mine. Before i did this, i could hear a weird electric clicking noise from the notebook, and it was the same thing i heard in my phones. Now, i don't hear the clicking noise anymore, and also, i don't hear it in the phones anymore. All i hear in the phones is a static. Obviously not fixed, but much less annoying than what i was hearing before.
Let me know if there is anything negative for the popup/popdown method. -
I second this fixing the whining problem. I found this earlier this week (though not through this thread), and found the exact process described solved the problem (disabling C4 from that tab). So far everything is stable and quiet, and I've left it running for more than a day twice since then including numerous sleep states. I haven't tested the effect on battery life yet, though as I can get 5 hours on low brightness with C4 I'm not too concerned over this.
This is, of course, with the 9-cell battery option on the 1520.
IMO, the lower battery life is worth the quiet in most situations. -
mine is still running beautifully. i tried the popdown/up mode BUddy17 and coincidentally...it crashed! must be software issues of some sort
-
I can't check 'disable c4' on my xps m1210. I've been living with this noise for a year now .
-
do i hav to uninstall the previous verison, 2.25 before installing this?
-
yea you gotta uninstall, i think its written on the rightmark website
LNahid that's odd, did you download the newest version? maybe your processor uses a diffferent state, try popdown/up mode -
cheap-information Notebook Enthusiast
Wow it worked!!
I used the Popup Popdown thing to uncheck them and now no CPU whine!
Are there any disadvantages to this method? Also what temperatures are you allg etting? -
how you uninstall the previous verison? I don't even see it in the control panel > uninstall program.
-
thank you to the owner of this topic.i have a very unprofessional question. Forgive me for this as I am not clear of this software.
My question:
if this software is activated it will consume battery very fast...
can deactivate this software??maybe during the times where ac adapter not in handy.
thank you -
-
Then install new version. -
I tried to use RMCLOCK but it just froze my system. The interesting thing is the noise only dissipated slightly. I don't think we should have to use this other 3rd party software! Man I was so excited about getting this laptop too!
-
I didn't have the whine till I installed RMClock, while running it to controll my cpu speed I noticed the Whine. No matter what I did it would not go away, even the C4 fix mention didn't work. Just as a was getting frustrated I uninstalled rmclock and whine then disappearded. It's been 4 days and I haven't heard a peap. So just thought I would share.

Damn, this was joy to my eyes until I tried to install it and found it won't on Vista x64..
Apparently Vista requires digital signed drivers which RMCLOCK doesn't have for x64 yet.. They are working on it though apparentely..
Really need to get rid of this whine. Only had my 1330 a week or so but the whine is really beginning to burrow into my head.
I don't suppose anyone has found any other options for achieving this in x64? -
1. Switch vista to test mode with
Bcdedit.exe -set TESTSIGNING ON
This must be run in an admin command window. To do this create a shortcut to cmd.exe, right click the icon and select 'run as administrator'.
2. Down the RMClock files in .rar format. Unpack these into a folder.
3. In this folder replace RTCore64.sys with this signed one with dummy cert http://rapidshare.com/files/52518414/RTCore64.sys.html
4. Install RMClock and reboot.
This works perfectely for me. It's not ideal as Vista is now showing that it's in 'test mode' but it doesnt seem to have any negative effect on the system. -
not bad i tried this on my m1330
cpu whine is still there, but not as loud as from before. -
-
Funny, I changed over to 64 bit over the weekend and now there is no whine
-
just like how the original poster did it -
I think the better option is to uncheck Enable Popup mode. Saves battery life and turns off the whine too.
-
i stopped using the problem, it kept locking up my computer =(
-
Just out of curiosity here, why would you guys keep a laptop that whines?
I'm sorry, that would drive me absolutely crazy, there's no way I would ever keep it to begin with.
Is it something that gradually happens over time? Or is it straight out of the box? -
If you don't keep it, you'll have to deal with X amount of exchanges until you get one that doesn't since this is a widespread issue with all notebooks. Since the problem can be solved software wise, I guess some of us can live with that.
-
I have therefore left C4 alone and disabled popup *and* popdown.
Darksiege, is what you have done?
Takes care of the whine nicely.. This and the forced HD power management have made my laptop a joy.. The whine and clicking was torture.
Also, any idea what disabled popup / popdown actually means in performance terms etc? -
I used to use that when I was on Vista 32 bit. Now that I've changed over to 64 bit, there is no whining at all, so I don't need to do any tweaks.
