What should be the normal temp for operating conditions for a laptop?
Ive installed that program that controls the fan and lets you know the temp of your cpu and the cpu load(preety Cool) but mine goes from 40 celcius @ idle to 70 celcius @ 100% cpu load. What is the breaking point of the cpu components?

70C? Well, that's a rather alarming temperature and can't be healthy for the laptop. Check your user guide for operating temperatures, it varies by laptop. Usually for a Dell the environment should be between 0 and 35C (32 F and 95F) and as long as the room your in is within that temp you're within your warranty and if things break...well then Dell tech support will come into play.

40 c idle sounds kinda VERY high... lets not even go there with the 70 when working - most desktops barely get that hot...

Well it shouldn't be lethal for your CPU - taking it up to 90/100 would start to damage your cpu...

I guess if your running a normal P4 then running hot is part of the business...

I found that software here in the forum. look like all the way to the earliest topics here at dell and youll c it. Maybe its accurate or maybe its not but it tells me always that in idle and regular, its about 38-40C and if i do disk clean up, the cpu goes to 100% usage and goes from 40 to 70c and it seems to stay at 70c. maybe thats the maximum, me dnt know but mine really gets so hota hota.

    Have
    Inspiron 8500

Check this cooler out... and seems there are coolers for pcmcia which are cooling it from the pcmcia slot

    Maybe it will help.
