I'm using the I8 utility and my system will run up to 54 or 55 then the fan kicks on and goes down to 37-38 and then turn off. Then it will gradually rise up to 54 or so again without doing anything... For instance, today it was sitting with no windows open at all and the screen saver (blank screen) came on and it still climbed up to 54 and the fan kicked on...

I read about people saying there's hovers around 42-45 and if gaming or high intensive apps it comes up to 55+ but I do no gaming, just web surfing, email...

Is this normal?? its annoying as heck, what can I do?

Update - My CPU always runs at almost full - if I check i8 it is always around 2000mhz - I went into BIOS and made sure speedstep was enabled...

download notebook hardware control (google it) and set it to dynamic switching. Also, undervolt the CPU and set the GPU to low power consumption

I really prefer to NOT undervolt the CPU - but I have read where it is supposed to not use full 2.0 ghz unless needed. I believe it is set for 5% minimum and 100 max, but mine seems to be at 100% all the time.

I have went into the ATI GPU power saver and set it for optimal battery life on battery and power cord.

Mine hangs around 30C unless under stress. Do you have something running in the background? Check your CPU usage under Task Manager, you should be 1 to 4% at idle. Dell puts a lot of shovel ware on these laptops.

Well, he came, he went. He installed or I should say, reinstalled the heat thingy and it does the same thing... No better at all.

    CRAP!

I lowerd my low speed threshold so that it is ALLWAYS on, and trigger high around 45, on my m1210 my idle temps are low 30's, at load I never crack 50 on my M1210, which is much more of a heat magnet than the 6400, I did the same with my old 6400, cant remember my exact temps as I sold it to get my M1210. Laptops in general all have their fans set to kick in at too high a temp in my opinion, they do this to reduce fan noise, I'd much rather have a cooler running system anyday.

My NVIDIA GPU will creep up and kick both fans on low or sometimes just the GPU fan from a cold start. Why your CPU is getting so hot doing nothing is strange. This may be caused by your ATI GPU?

I use I8kan to auto start with GPU fan, only, to run on low speed during cold boot, I then run the single fan all day just futzing around.

When gaming, the BIOS takes over both fans automatically. i would not want any program to screw with or fight the BIOS for fan control during high heat conditions.

The 6400 only has one fan.

OK, stupid me. Yes, the 6400 has but one fan. I'm thinking 9400! OK, this makes sense now if the CPU and GPU share the same heat spreader. Mine has it's own fan and heatpipe so can dissipate heat separately from the GPU.

Ur ex-wife; yep, today mine is sitting 34C with the GPU fan on low. It will sit there all day until asked to do something CPU intensive. I'm going to check out the difference of the 6400 vs E1505 fan set ups so I don't open my big mouth.

    Cheers.
