I was wondering is it possible to install a CDRW/DVDRW drive at home for a laptop or would I need to return this to Dell for an upgrade?

Do they have a time limit for these kind of things?

Yes you can upgrade this yourself. Dell considers it user upgradeable. It won't void your warranty, but won't be covered in your warranty either.

Dell won't replace it unless something went wrong with your old cd/dvd drive and they are replacing it under warranty - but you'll receive the same type of drive that you had. If you only had a CD-rom,then that is what your replacement would be.

There isn't a time limit. You can upgrade the cd/dvd drive whenever you want to.

    That sounds good to me.

I've read bad things about Dell customer service, so I'm trying to avoid it as much as possible.

It seems to be a hit or miss. Personally, I would rather have a tech come out and work on my laptop than send it in. I've heard horror stories about mailing laptops in - everything from causing damage on the LCD to erasing the HDD.

At the same time these things are common with all manufacturers.

    Hello,

It is always a good idea to remove your HDD before sending in your laptop (unless the problem is on the HDD itself, ;) )

I like NEC and LG drives if you are looking for a drive.
