If I buy a system that is configured for XP, then run a clean install of Vista Ultimate (software purchased separately thru my school), will this all be OK?

Will there be any difficulties w/ drivers?

There could be, why don't you buy a system with Vista on it then use the ultimate to do a clean install that way you are sure that the internals are configured and drivers available for Vista. Or, you can stick with Xp, I had Vista and finally went back to Xp after 5 months.

When I run the installation disk of Vista Ultimate, will it install the drivers?

I see that all the drivers are downloadable from dell.com

No, it will probably have some generic drivers available, but I recommend that you download those drivers and burn to cd/dvd before the upgrade so that you don't have to use the net in case the network card (NIC or Wireless) don't work with the generic windows drivers.

You could also partition the disc in the setup and install Vista alongside Xp and Dual Boot, I learned how to do this here from APCMag's website.

So if I DL the drivers from dell.com, burn to disk, and use those when installing vista ultimate, that would be the best option?

That way I have a copy of XP that I can roll back to in case I don't like vista

Will I still reap the benefits of a clean install by going this way?

One thing I notice is that the DVD +/- RW drive is different for Vista Ultimate than for other Vista's or XP. Will this be a problem when I upgrade, or is it just a matter of upgrading drivers?

It seems that the bluetooth driver is located on dell.com, so that fix should be ok?

Can anyone help clarify how the "clean install" would work in this case? Can I wipe my XP entirely clear and then install vista ultimate, to get the speed benefits of a clean install?

Thanks for your help, as I'm semi-clueless when it comes to OS stuff...

Sorry to bump this up once more, but I'm really back and forth with this.

I was debating canceling my order and placing a new one with Vista instead, so if anyone else has insight, i'd appreciate it

Yes that is correct and you will also be able to do the "clean install."
