I've been reading a lot of reviews on the Inspiron 1420 and it seems to be just what I need. However, one thing I found out about this model is that it has audio stuttering problems. I'm hoping I can select a configuration to help avoid this problem. Any advice would greatly appreciated.
This is what I've selected:
SYSTEM COLOR: Midnight Blue
PROCESSOR: Intel® Core 2 Duo T7250 (2MB cache/2.0GHz/800Mhz FSB)
OPERATING SYSTEM: Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium Edition
DISPLAY: Glossy, high contrast, widescreen 14.1 inch display (1280x800)
VIDEO CARD: 128MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8400M GS
MEMORY: 2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz
HARD DRIVE Size: 160GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
INTERNAL OPTICAL DRIVE: CD / DVD writer (DVD+/-RW Drive)
WIRELESS NETWORK CARDS: Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card
BLUETOOTH OPTIONS: Built-in Bluetooth capability (2.0 EDR)
INTEGRATED WEBCAM: Integrated 2.0 Megapixel Webcam
BATTERY OPTIONS: 6-cell Primary Battery and 9-cell additional Lithium Ion Battery
SOUND OPTIONS: Integrated Sound Blaster® AudigyHD Software Edition
totals about $934 with rebate
btw...has anyone heard of someone putting Mac OSX on a Insprion 1420.

Installing the Mac OS on anything outside of an Apple product is illegal.
I'm really not sure if there's anything that can be done to prevent the audio stuttering problem. It might very well be the luck of the draw. -
hi ..... the audio stuttering problem reported is true....i am having this problem....the audio and video sometimes gets stuttered....where have you read about this....do you have any solutions or suggestions....i donno anything abt the sundblaster audigy from creattive......this may solve this issue........the stutter is infact seen rarely only......its more obvious if u enable the SRS wow effect in windows media player......however this is the only problem this machine has....and unless u r a die hard music fan theres nothing stopping u from grabbing a machine.......its a really nice piece of machine...

First off, get a Vostro 1400 - MUCH cheaper for the same config.
Second, ditch the Creative SB Audigy thing - it's just a piece of crappy software that won't do anything special.
The Vostro 1400 has an XP option if you want XP - otherwise stick with Vista.
Either way, I had an audio stutter problem until I did a clean reinstall and updated to the latest bios (A07 for Vostro)
I would go ahead and order one. They are great little laptops! -
Got my vostro 1400 (same thing as 1420 but much cheaper)
No stuttering here. been perfect. -
Hi there, check out this thread if you like, but I think you will find that it is hit-and-miss as far as audio problems go. There are tonnes of threads on here with regards to these issues, (as I'm sure you are aware), with several credible cures. The problem is not specific to the 1420. The XPS models (some), as well as the 1520 are all victim to the mentioned issues. Good luck with your purchase is you decide to go ahead with it. I just received my refund last week after having returned my units back in November.

From what I gathered it's more of a software problem then hardware problem. So that doesn't bother me that much. I should be more then able to fix it. Anyways, how functional and stylish would you say the vostro 1400. It actually looks to be about $300 more for the same setup.

Hi
I got two vostro's as well. My wife's came with integrated graphics, Dell 1390 Wifi card and No Bluetooth. Mine came with 8400 graphics, Dell 1505 Draft N Wireless card and Bluetooth. She did not have the audio stutter problem but i did. Only way i was able to solve it was to deactivate the n band in my cards settings and only connect via b/g to the router. Kind of defeats the prupose of having an n card but at least no audio stutters. Besides that extremely pleased with both systems. Kind of heavy though with the 9 cell. Mine weighs 6 pounds. Does that sound right fellow vostro owners?
The other thing is that the palm rest is just a little bit smaller than the one's on an e1405 so i feel a lil bit cramped while typing but then again i have big hands i guess
Best of luck and i would recommend saving money and going with vostro as well.
Buying an Inspiron 1420 and am trying to avoid audo stutter.
