    Hi All,

When you buy a laptop from dell, do you configure your spec and call the sales to negotiate the price or do you go along and pay for it online?

Why dont you just post the 'cool trick' and help others?

As to the OP, if you search my posts you will see I had a very popular Dell guide that was used for quite awhile and I can honestly say saved people alot of money.

    Actually... here!!

As for more recent trends, its alot tougher now as the sales team has moved to India for both online and telephone sales. Alot of the reponses seem to indicate they are very ard to get deals from.

    Good luck.

Les - simply, I thought it would give people a chance to actually USE it as opposed to Dell going out of their way to squash it.

Along these lines - IME, if you do the online sales chat from your shopping cart, you always get an english speaking rep in Texas. Les, as you mentioned, it IS easier to get a little love from the reps in Texas as opposed to overseas.

I'd also appreciate learning this "trick". That being said, here's the method I used when buying my last notebook (Compaq Evo N620c).

I configured an IBM T41, Dell D600, and Compaq Evo N620c with similar specs (and similar prices), then called up the manufacturers and played them off one another to get the best price. Just like buying a car.

Ok, I just don't have time to PM people all day long :) I'll post it here for your review.

It's not that "tricky" really - just how Dell works.

Basically, this works on Dell systems that are already offering an instant discount (not coupon). Usually, you can NOT apply coupons on TOP of the online discount - for example, the loaded m1530 currently has a $599 disount. If dell had a coupon out right now (they might??), you could not stack the coupon with the $599 disount.

Here's the "trick". During a time where recent coupons have expired and there are no current coupons available (maybe even if they are, as I've never had a dell rep offer me a coupon code on the phone) - you can initiate a chat from your CART window on the Dell US site and get an English-speaking Dell rep from Texas. Simply explain to him that you are trying to use a coupon code but you think that it's expired. He might not give you the full value of the coupon but they gave me $150 and an almost-free gaming mouse...BUT HERE's THE CATCH - they allowed me to apply this to the system that had the $599 online discount, where normally, this does not happen.

I had previously ordered a slightly lower-spec'd machine to save some money, but after doing this - I got the same machine, larger hard drive, 3-year warranty (vs. the 1 year I had selected before) and it was $25 less than my original order.

    Good luck guys.
