I've decided to buy an Inspiron 630m (AKA the XPS M140) and I'm not sure whether to go for glossy or matte. I've never seen a glossy LCD screen in real life, but I know that most people seem to prefer them. So should I opt for TrueLife, with better contrast but higher reflectivity or keep with a matte screen with less colour but lower reflectivity? Note I'll be using this laptop in all sorts of enviroments.

ive got a matte screen and my friend has the glossy, and the glossy is nice. in general it just makes the laptop look more impressive, but i still stand behind the matte screen for its low reflectivity especially since my desk has a lamp right behind it that would cause problems with a glossy screen. The best thing to do is go to your local electronics store and look at some glossy screens, and then if you can go to the apple store, look at the mac book pro and see how a matte screen should be :D. At least check out the glossy in person though.

i agree with kidA. go check them out in a store. i've had both glossy and non, and though i do love the glossy, the reflectivity can get to me at times...esp with the brightness all the way up. i just recently ordered a dell with non-glossy and i think i'll like it just fine. :)

You can see the 630m/XPS140 in person at the local Dell Direct store at the Mall. But if you just want to compare and you don't have one of those in reasonable driving distance. You should be able to check out screen at somewhere like Bestbuy, CircuitCity, or OfficeDepot.

Glossy screens enhance colors and contrast. But at the price of reflection on the screen. Sometimes the light in stores make them look worse than they really are.

Matte screens are the traditional style screens. They don't reflect light and may be better if your prone to eye strange. This screen is also a little better in direct sunlight.

Definitely go and check them out in person - it's really a matter of personal preference.

I couldn't decide between matte or glossy either, but since I got my computer from Dell Outlet I didn't have a choice.... received the matte screen, which I'm happy with, since I don't think I'd like all the reflection. Basically there are pros and cons associated with each, so I think you'll be happy with whichever you choose.

An additional note - if you can, request a Quanta screen since it seems to be much better (richer colors) than the Samsung.

i have a m140 with the glossy screen and i like it, my roommate has a 600m with a nonglossy screen and i like the glossy better but this is totally a personal preference thing. i would definately go check one out are the store. however i do wish that i could get the sxga screen or something like that cause it is really nice
