You have to do it from the power settings

Fn + up arrow for a temporary change (on most Dells I've seen).

If you want to set it more long-term then go into BIOS settings at bootup.

Press Fn+uparrow repeatedly and it should eventually get as bright as when plugged in.

For more than a temporary change, reboot. When you first turn on the machine, it will flash a message like "Press F2 for setup" or something like that. This refers to the F2 function key at the top of the keyboard. I don't know if it'll be F2 on yours, it might be ctrl-alt-S or some other weird key or key combo, but it should tell you what to press. You have to press it quickly when it shows this message, and if you're too late then restart and try again. That gets you to the BIOS settings menu. There should be instructions on the screen about how to navigate this menu system. Go to the screen brightness (when on battery) setting and set it to the max. Choose the option to save settings and reboot.

I don't have your specific model and the details about what keys to press vary from one machine to another, so that's why I can't be more specific. But I think those general directions will work for you.

It did not give me an option to change screen brightness. I have a Dell Ispiron E1505 and Inspiron 6000. Thanks,
