  Help, My girlfriend's brand new (just opened 30 minutes ago) 1737 screen went black and now she hears some strange sounds like the fans are grinding after turning it on its side to send me the model number....... She is in MD and i am in IL, so i dont have direct access to help. I told to to play with the darkness/contrast buttons with "Fn + directional keys", also told her to reboot several times, and to open and close the lid........ and no results....

    please help.

The grinding noise could be a CD in the slot loader...

If the screen won't turn on even after she pulls the battery then puts it in and puts it on AC power I recommend a quick call to Dell.

If she has at home warranty care they can have a tech + screen at her door within 2 business days (1 day for parts to get to the tech and 1 day for the tech to come)...

    Thanks Frazell.

To clarify i believe she means to say that the screen is dark but barely visible.

Ah I see. That sounds like a backlight problem. It probably died.

Even though her machine is new there is always the risk of manufacturing problems. The company who made the LCD probably had a manufacturing error in her panel.

A quick call (or chat) to Dell is all she needs. They will replace the panel no problem and she'll be on her way :D.
