Should I be worried? My Inspiron 1420 (specs in sig) that just arrived yesterday feels rather warm after running it for about 2 hours, yet my dad's 3 year old Acer only gets that warm (it's still cooler actually) after running for 2.5~3 hours. Since it's running an NVidia GeForce 8400 M GS, I'm concerned that this is the opening symptom of GPU failure or something equally nasty. I'll download a few diagnostic programmes and run them to figure out the CPU and GPU temps for those of you curious to know.

Temps would definitely be helpful as soon as you get them. If your Dads Acer has integrated graphics (ie Intel 950, etc) then it actually is going to run cooler than your model which utilizes a dedicated graphics core. I don't think you have anything to be concerned about, but lets take a look at your temps to be sure.

Ah yes, he is running an integrated graphics model--his Acer is a Travelmate 29xx, pretty old. I know my laptop would be running warmer than his--it's just that the fans keep on kicking in very often, and high temps are a concern while running as there's a heat wave on, and ambient temps are rising unless you're in an air-con room, which is not practical due to the electric bill rocketing. So as you say, Dook, probably nothing much, but I'd feel better if I knew it for sure. If temps are this high in the late morning, I'd hate to see what happens at three in the afternoon here when temperatures rise to about 38 degrees Celcius.

Alright, thanks guys--temps are here, first taken before the fans kicked in, the second a few minutes after, both times the laptop is elevated by a large empty ring file some 2" off the table, room ventilated by a low ceiling fan, laptop on Vista Aero. Anything else needed let me know:

This was about 30 mins after the temp2 pic, nothing GPU stressing on except Vista Aero:

Hmm. I think your GPU should be fine? I'm not sure but my idles at low 60's to mid 60's and goes up to the 70's when I'm gaming.
