It does get very hot..and there is a functioning fan there.
That, however is not my concern. I'm worried that there is a sort of clicking noise coming from there...its like maybe once a second or so...sounds like a timer almost. It can be annoying in a quiet room. Anyone know whats on that side of the machine, if this is normal, or what I can do to fix it?

It is your hard drive. It is normal, if you get NHC you might be able to turn down the speed, (though i am not entirely sure it has to do with the fast speed). It is a problem of many 2.5 inch (laptop) 7200 rpm hard drives.

Ok, then I'm not worried about it. I'd much rather it be an easily replaceable component like that than my HDD or GPU preparing to explode. Thanks!

Thats were your 9700GS lives. Yes, use I8kfan to check your temps. You said it gets hot, you ment when playing games or just sitting?

Dell laptops don't explode. Laptop batteries explode;and Dell ain't alone there.

I'm waiting for ALL laptop batteries are banned from all commercial fights. All it's going to take is one major incident in the overhead bin?
