At the Dell screen, press F12, then find the option for restore to original settings. I mean, this depends on your exact model, but it's been F12 for quite a lot of them.

F12 is not only used to select the boot device, from within that menu you can run other things such as diagnostics, and I was sure that was where you could restore to original settings.

If you are unable to do a factory reset. Than you might be missing out a step. Can't think of why this would happen though.

If you wanna try something and are desperate than i would recommend you go into bios and change the hard drive mode from AHCI to IDE. Than try installing vista. If that works you can than do a factory reset and revert back to AHCI mode again.

Or else you can use a partitioning utility by booting windows from a usb (bootparte method).

If you are unable to create partitions using vista or xp reinstallation disks, try some other partitioning tool like partition magic (rescue disk method) or make a bootable cd and run some other disk utility. If those cant partition your drive than it definitely needs replacement.

However I think that vista reinstallation disk is somehow unable to read partitions on your drive and there's nothing wrong with the harddisk itself. Probably the partition tables got damaged somehow. You should try something like this http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/.

I prefer using acronics, which is far better or if you have an xp cd, use that by turning off AHCI from BIOS and try to partition using xp.
