I have a Studio 17 with Vista Home Premium preinstalled. Im trying to install Vista Ultimate 64 bit, and when I boot from the DVD, it says Loading files, than at the end of that it shows me to screen with the Microsoft bar like its going to load windows, but then I immediately get a blue screen with the error irql not equal to or something like that.

I tried disable the flash cache in the BIOS but it still gets the blue screen as soon as it trys to enter the setup screen.

My BIOS is set to ACHI and I have not changed that.

I wanted to try out the 64 bit Vista and still have my 32 bit on it in case I run into some apps that wont run in 64 bit.

anyone have any idea what I need to do? I have a seperate logical partition that I made for the Vista 64 bit. So I have 2 partitions, a C: partition which has the Vista Home on it that came with this laptop and I was hoping to install the 64 bit onto the D: partition but Im getting the blue screen.

Do I need to do anything with the ACHI setting? I have 4 gigs of ram and would like to use it.

Thankyou in advance I'm really puzzled on this one, and I've been installing OS's for years, this one has me baffled.

Maybe your system is not x64 capable?

It is capable. I am running it right now. I would say you have a bad Vista DVD if it is not loading and your BIOS is set to the default settings. That or whatever the bootloader Vista uses is having a conflict with the way you are trying to set up a dual boot system.

I have not run into a single major program that does not work on Vista. Usually the driver signing issue is the only problem until you disable it. Unless you are running some old *** software that won't work in 64bit despite Vistas compatibility mode, I would format and run 64 bit Vista exclusively.

Vista 64 has an issue installing with 4gb ram. If you take out 2gb and then install you'll be OK. You can put the other 2gb back in after the install. Try googling 'vista 64 install 4gb ram'

Wow, thanks for the post. That solved my install problems that I originally thought was the AHCI mode of the SATA controller.

Never heard of the 4GB RAM issue as my desktop has 4GB too and runs Vista Ultimate 64. I had no issues installing it on my Studio 17 with 4GB either, but I have gotten the "IRQL not less or equal" BSOD several times and in all honesty have no idea what causes it as it seems to happen randomly. Touch wood I've not had it for a few days now and not installed or uninstalled anything.

Am I right in assuming the D: partition isn't the original 10GB one?

SpoogleDrummer yes you are correct the Studio 17 came with a D: partition that had the Recovery tools on it, but I re partitioned the drive, formatted it with 3 partitions, and I re installed the Vista x86 onto the C: partition as its normally done.

The irql not less or equal to error can be a driver conflict, from what I read on a Google search.

I dont think the problem is the 4 gig of ram because people with Dell Studio's have installed Vista x64 on them with 4 gigs of ram without errors. I did read about removing 2 gigs of ram, and installing, but I think that refers to Vista OS without SP1. SP1 was supposed to incorporate that "hot fix" thats talked about in those posts I read.

I've gotten about a half dozen or more blue screen errors trying to install this Vista x64, each time its a different error, the last one said Page fault in non paged area. Another one said System Service Exception error, IRQ not less or equal to error, and some others. Its different each time.

Here is how the install goes. I have the Vista Home Premium on my drive, and I boot the Vista x64 DVD, then I select boot from cd/dvd, and then it prompts to press any key to boot from the DVD. Then I see the screen that says its loading the files with the white progress bar at the bottom, that goes fine, then I get the next screen which is black and has whatever the thing is that goes from left to right about 5 times while windows is loading usually, and that part is ok, then its a black screen with just the mouse arrow, like just before you see your Vista login screen and thats when it blue screens out, just when its supposed to display the setup screen. So its looking at something that isnt right and it comes to a stop.

Im still puzzled, maybe I have to wipe the drive completely and get a boot manager like EZBCD or one of those and start from scratch, I was hoping to just boot up and select what partition I wanted and go from there. Oh well, I'll keep reading and trying.

Thanks for your help I appreciate any input,

    Nicholas,

What kind of CPU do you have? Most C2D based CPU supports x64.

vista X64 has no problem installing with 4GB, AHCI, and even extra partitions. It will prompt you to wipe them out.

Most importantly is what CPU you have and updated BIOS?

My processor is the Intel Core 2 duo T8100 2.10 ghz its supposed to support x64 OS . I should be able to just boot the DVD and follow the prompts to select partition, size, etc. I've installed all Window OS's from Win 95, ME, 98, XP, in the past many times and the only BSOD screens I got were with XP Pro, when I had to hit F6 and load my Raid controller. This reminds me of a hardware driver problem. I'm not sure what the problem is, and I havent tried setting the BIOS to ATA because from reading the forums this only results in BSOD's upon restarting it, Vista is build to run with AHCI and it can do 4 gigs of memory with SP1 , I wish the error screen was consistent so I could track the error code down and isolate the problem. I doubt that the DVD is bad, but who knows. But this processor should do x64.

I believe it was solved, you need to have less than 4GB in while installing. I didn't have any issue when I installed Vista x64 on my desktop with 8GB.

You'd be surprised at how many bad OS CD's/DVD's are out there. Also, confirm that your Vista x64 DVD includes SP1. Like others have said, you need SP1 for it to let you install onto a 4GB+ machine.
