Im looking at the inspiron 1720, or the XPS 1530 with WUXGA+ screens. The Inspiron has an option for either the read only Blu-Ray or the B-R reader and writer. The XPS has only the option for the B-R reader/writer. I was wondering if the writing part of the drive is actually useful, due to the slow speed it would take to write 25-50 GB of data.

    Thanks :)

Slow speed?? Rememer its writing 25/50GB of data! Writing that much data is going to take a while - its not like a few minutes it will take to write a CD-R, or the 15 mins for a DVD! We are taking massive amounts of data here!

I got the BluRay writer in my M1730 not because I needed it, but because I wanted to future proof my system as much as i possible could. When the cost of BluRay discs does fall, which will happen eventually, I'll already have the hardware to write to them ready to use. Im not sure how long it takes to write a full disc, but the systems these days are powerful enough to allow you to run several other applications while burning a disc. Hence I can leave a disc to burn and carry on with my other tasks as normal.
