I know alot of people have posted and tried but i just did it myself.. with the replys of others to help..

    1 video.

I used ANYDVD ( to remove any protection, since i kept getting the error 1122 for some incompatable display driver...) and switched from LCD to the tv using FN-F8. to switch the display.

    2. sound.

Set to HDMI sound( select it as the default) under sound menu

    worked for me...

How's the quality compared to a stand alone HD player (or other HD sources)? Smooth longterm playback? Thanks.

What is this protection issue regarding error 1122???

I had assumed that all I would need to do it press the FN-F8 keys to toggle the display to the external LCD TV I have, and once it displays the desktop on there I would be free to insert a Blu-Ray disc and play a film as normal?

So, what you are saying is that I can display my desktop on an external source as per normal, but cannot wantch Blu-Ray movies without another piece of software like AnyDVD??

now i know why so many people were so against HDCP and the HDMI format..thats rediculous that you have to use anydvd to watch a bluray movie.

what I don't get is the drivers - I've had it tell me my "equipment doesn't meet HDCP certifications" which AnyDVD can get rid of - but if it says incompatible drivers, you're just plain screwed and have to get different drivers... AnyDVD doesn't fix that problem for me... :|

    What exactly does AnyDVD do??
Is it a DVD Player software, or do you still view movies on Media Player with AnyDVD running in the background??

Also does AnyDVD give you the ability to watch movies from any region??

Also, to watch Blu-Ray movies do I need to buy AnyDVD, and then buy the AnyDVD HD Upgrade, or do I just buy the AnyDVD HD version outright?

I also agree that its a bit silly that I will need AnyDVD to watch a blu-ray moview. I had thought I would have been able to watch a blu-ray just like I would a standard DVD.... :(

AnyDVD strips AACS/CSS encryption and Region coding from HD DVD's, BD's (BluRay Discs), and DVD's before playback occurs on a media player capable of reading the format being played.

    Yes.

You need AnyDVD and AnyDVD HD for HD DVD's and BD's. Results seem to vary between discs and set-ups. For example, I had to disable BD support in AnyDVD to get playback on any of the Die Hard BD's, using PowerDVD Ultra. The Spiderman BD's played just fine with it enabled.

DRM/HDCP makes this, sadly, difficult to accomplish.

Incidentally, my 1720 is hooked up to a 50" plasma using VGA (1366x768@60Hz, the panel's native res) and the results are excellent. HDMI is not currently necessary to enjoy high definition playback from a PC. Although this may change in the future, anyone who says you must use a digital connection for the best results is simply mistaken.

Thanks for your answers. If it helps to watch movies of any region I'd be very likely to get it!!

So the way I understand it is that when I receive the laptop I will be unable to play BD movies, whether its on the laptop itself or on an external display, until I have AnyDVD??

Is this only with HDMI connectiosn to an external display??
I wouldnt mind just using normal DVI out on the laptop with a VGA adaptor to go onto my TV - will I still need AnyDVD for this also?

I wouldn't go so far as to say that AnyDVD is absolutely necessary for BD playback. All I know is that I tried using Media Direct with and without it, with no success. The Media Direct on my machine was supposed to support BD playback. It's worthless, IMHO. But, I haven't tried PowerDVD without having AnyDVD installed so, I really don't know how essential it is. At this point my machine works the way I want it to so, I'm not anxious to make any changes...

I dont think I'd be using media direct anyway, so if I just use PowerDVD, should I be able to view BD Movies on my laptop and on an external display?

Does AnyDVD also take care of the country codes that came with DVD's, e.g. when I am in the US and have a US laptop I could still switch between European DVD's/BD's and US DVD's/BD's?

The BD option is a $500 upgrade! I'd like to know this also. I was under the impression that once i had blueray, and a player (like powerdvd), i could watch BD movies on my HDTV using HDMI from laptop to tv. can i just skip the media direct?

    p.s. i dont own the 1530 yet,

Thats exactly what I want to know as well, and I assumed exactly the same as you!
If we do skip the media direct, do we also no longer need AnyDVD??

AnyDVD though seems to have a problem with reading DVD's from region 2 with the BD drive installed.

All Dell need to do is release a new driver that allows better gaming performance and BD playback.
Is that too much to ask? For Dell to SUPPORT a system they have released?!

Update: It seems that this Mat****a drive is a little rough to deal with when it comes to reading different region codes "at the same time". One cannot do that with this drive. :-(

i have the m1530 with bluray, and dell media direct is able to play the bluray discs, and i can get both video and audio to the tv using hdmi...

no need for anydvd or any other dvd-playing software.

Yes but we are discussing using the latest non-Dell certified performance video drivers and how they stop the BD playback.....aparently it all works fine with the standard Dell drivers - but they are way old!

    oh.

but what's wrong with the dell drivers, if they allow you to play bluray discs of any region?

They dont allow you to play games at decent settings.

Dell Drivers = everything works on laptop, but game performance is rubbish (quite ironic since its supposed to be a gaming laptop!).

Tweaked nVidia Drivers - From NBF or laptopvideo2go - Offer much better performance for games etc, but do not play back BD Movies etc!

Its a trade off at the mo. Of course its fine if you dont have a BluRay drive, but I will have!

    oh okay - thanks.

i guess i don't play games, so am happy with the dell drivers! (i have the 1530, not the 1730 - your specs on your 1730-to-be are pretty impressive!)

    Cheers ;)

Im not a huge gamer myself TBH. But I do like to have the odd game installed for occasional use. Im currently selling my XBox 360 since I dont get much time to play it any more, but wouldnt mind keeping Gears Of War as that was an awesome game IMO. Thats the only one Im really interested in at the mo.

Apart from that I would be using the laptop as a more developmental platform, which is why its high spec - that and the fact that I got a fantastic deal on it in terms of price through my Business manager ;)

If the current situation continues, I would also probably choose the dell drivers, just so everything works! However, whether I do choose to play games or not, I like to know that I have my system performing as well as it can without having to sacrifice performce because of Dell's lack of driver support.

    achw,
it is not the driver that decides which region can be played on your DVD or BD drive. It is the drive itself that just let's you switch the region 4 times. Then it is locked in for the rest of its life.

Correct, the firmware in the drive will lock itself after a certain number of changes, and this is irreversable.

I tried playing "Live Free Or Die Hard" the other day on my BD drive but it didn't want to play.
With AnyDVD enabled it said :"This BD is for Region A. Please eject and play in a region A player." (According to PowerDVD my drive is locked to region A.) And without AnyDVD it just gets stuck.
Has anybody else seen this problem?

presumably this is only for the dvd (which is restricted to the number of times you can change regions) and not for the blu-ray (which doesn't have any such warning popping up when selecting regions)?

is there any way at all to get rid of the region locking for dvd players in laptops? i know standalone dvd players have a number of ways to unlock - but do laptops?

    achw,
so far there are just solutions like AnyDVD and such that try to eliminate those restrictions that are put on BD drives. (HD DVD drives don't face this problem)

thanks - just so i am clear, are you saying the bluray player is also region locked (after a number of attempts)?

on mine, i seem to be able to select the region (ie a, b or c) depending on the disc i am playing. no warning pops up about a limited number of changes (like it does with the dvd player) - so far, i've assumed there are unlimited changes (unlike a dvd, where the warning that pops up says you can only change the region 6 times).

    achw,

thank you for having tested that. I was sure it was like the DVD feature where it would be locked after 4 changes. Apparently I was wrong.

Oh excellent - I wanted a multiregion BD drive! ;)

    This just keeps getting better.
I added the Blu Ray drive to my system thinking it was a BluRay reader.
Turns out its a writer, and now turns out its multiregion! lol
